Dialing rules don't work...? (XP home)

Before I begin, I'll mention that I've read the thread that begins with post 117859, and I'm still looking for an answer. Here goes:

I've used XP's faxing application on several occasions, but until recently all my faxes went to local numbers. I've had no trouble with faxing to local numbers, but long distance was another matter. I set my dialing rules to dial 1 when calling outside my own area code. I even specifically told it to dial 1- when calling numbers in the target area code. Nonetheless, the dialer seems to ignore those instructions. I finally got my fax to go through, but only after I manually put "1-" in front of the area code!

Oddly enough, I had the same problem not long ago when I tried this same thing on a Windows 2000 machine at work. What am I overlooking?

It appears on my Windows XP Home SP-1 system that the dialing rules do not work as well. I posted here a while back and tried the suggestions posted but they did not solve my problem. Tried the solutions in the MicrosoftKB but they didn't work either.

Lucas, Check out this MS KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q318575. Also has a link to a Win2k article.

Thank you very much, Joe! Now I see that the solution I applied is precisely the "fix" Kaiser Bill supplies and that this behavior is "by design."

Not to belabor the point (and I certainly don't expect any member of this forum to have the answer), but if the dialing rules won't apply to fax and phone dialer, what the *&$# DO they apply to? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> I don't even see the point of having a dialing rules dialog if you have to write the phone number in "canonical form" anyway! Know whadda mean?

    Lucas,
My guess would be that they apply to a dialup networking connection.
