I need recommendations for a registry cleaner that can be used with XP. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

I continue to have pretty good luck with Norton System Works, 2003, which includes more than just registry cleaning...I read somewhere that Norton's packages should be paired with the operating system it's written for (like the Norton's that is released at the same time to OS is - I'm ruinning XP Home SP-1 as well)...

    I wish it wasn't luck...

    Good luck,

    dr carl

brett, Take a look at jv16 power tools at http://www.jv16.org. Good stuff. Plus he's got an intetesting comparison between his & several other registry tools.

Besides Norton SystemWorks 2002, I also use Iolo Software's "System Mechanic" which is available for a 30 trial or purchase at www.iolo.com .
I have found "mechanic" to be very safe and accurate to use and also has other features like cleaning out Junk files and clearing various caches etc.
I use them both to do routine cleanup and have not had problems with either of them so far as getting too zealous in doing their job.

    Hi Brett,
I also have had jv16 in use here for a while. Too soon for an opinion yet. The jury is still out on this. I does seem much slower than the others but maybe a second release will speed things up a bit. Meanwhile, I continue to use them all, including Tweak-Xp, yet another good candidate. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

From Fred Langa's recent newsleter on reg cleaners:
    Free Reg Cleaner Grows Up
Thank you for the Langa list. I recall that you have covered in the past the topic of reg cleaners , including jv16 Power tools.

The software developer, Jouni Vuorio, has recently run a comparison test among a number of reg Cleaners (comparison results: http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/registry_test.shtml), which may prove to be significant for readers who use utility programs. --- Boo Johnson

Thanks, Boo. Indeed, registry cleaners tend to be either overcautious (leaving junk in the Registry) or too aggressive (removing some keys and values that should be left alone). It's hard to get it "just right."

But Jouni may have done so: The current just-released final version of jv16 PowerTools is very good. It's the "big brother" of past generations of Registry cleaners he's released--- and they were pretty good too. Power Tools is, in fact, more than just a reg cleaner--- it's a whole mini-suite of useful goodies.

The new version's reg cleaning is actually a little slow (it takes close to 5 minutes to work through the half million Registry settings on my main machine) but it does seem to have struck a good balance between power and safety.

jv16 PowerTools is donationware; the license is free for personal use, although the author accepts donations (and the software really is of commercial quality). Well worth a look!

Looks like a good comparison to help a person to decide.

    Brett hi

I have been using Evidence Eliminator 5.0 for the past 6 months and have found it to be very good. While it is not free, US$150, it does combine several very useful functions including a very comprehensive registry cleaner. http://www.evidence-eliminator.com/.
    cheers

I like RegScrubXP from LexunFreeware@carolina.rr.com - it has done no harm even when accepting all recommended fixes.
