Recycle Bin icon lost.

My neice says her icon is no longer on her computer and she would like to restore it but doesn't know how. Neither do I and we need some help. It seems that one day it was there and the next day it had disappeared.

She is running Windows 98 SE and being a newbie, she doesn't know how to do much on her computer. She doesn't have Tweaj UI.

Would someone please help ?

Re: Recycle Bin icon lost.

If you can get a copy of MyProperties.exe (see Software Finds and Wants), it has a facility to restore default icons, including Recycle Bin. But see General Windows Solutions - Little Green Folder for the unpredicatability of MyProperties. However it works for some of us, it's simple and it does not seem to do any harm even when it does not work.

Re: Recycle Bin icon lost.

TweakUI is the easy solution. Otherwise, I suspect she is going to have to use a .reg file. She needs to add the Class Identifier for the Recycle Bin to the Desktop NameSpace. Eh, huh?

She can do this easily by running this .reg file:

-----------------------------------------------

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionexplorerDesktopNameSpace{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"

---------------------------------------------------

And, before I get reprimanded, have her back up the registry first! ;-]

I have also attached the same .reg file -- but I was required to convert it to an ".rtf" file to allow it to be attached. The extension needs to be changed to .reg before it will work.

Re: Recycle Bin icon lost.

It doesn't matter how you do it -- using TweakUI, MyProperties, or any other third-party program.

To see the Recycle Bin icon on the Desktop, you MUST have the Recycle Bin's Class Identifier "registered" to the Desktop NameSpace.

You can do it using an unpredictable third-party program -- or just do it yourself!
______________________

It appears the MyProperties program is no longer available from the original link -- but, you can get it from the green_folder.zip file here.

I believe you can use this program to get the Recycle Bin back on the Desktop. HOWEVER, it is not necessarily intuitive how you would do it. You might be inclined to modify the Recycle Bin icon and think that will put the icon on your Desktop -- it will not!! That will only modify the icon ONCE you get the Recycle Bin to appear on the Desktop.

But, if you go to the Misc. tab and "Rename Recycle Bin" simply "Recycle Bin", and hit Apply -- that should work! This is because renaming the Recycle Bin will add the Recycle Bin's ClassID to the Desktop Namespace -- because that is where the name is stored.

Alternatively, you can rename the Recycle Bin Desktop icon using my .reg file above by simply modifying the last line:

@="My Trash Can"

I see I'm going to need a lot of help here. First - Where do I find a copy of My Properties.exe?
Next, where do I go to see Software Finds and Wants?

I read the post: Little Green Folder, and I see what you mean.

I hate to be a pest, but if you don't know - you don't know and that's the end of the story (smile).

BigAlDoc has put MyProperties on his website see Post 194237 in This Thread.

Next, where do I go to see Software Finds and Wants?

Go to Main Index and choose Software Finds and Wants.

Re: Recycle Bin icon lost.

Duchess, I do know -- and that's the end of the story!!

I gave you the link to the MyProperties program in my post above -- click the word "here". It is INSIDE the green_folder.zip file on Al Hoffman's site. (There, I gave it to you again!)

You don't have to go to Software Finds and Wants.

You don't have to use the MyProperties program -- you can simply use the .reg file I provided.

I do NOT think there is ANY problem whatsoever with the MyProperties program. I have tested it out myself and it simply makes registry modifictions. It is NOT unreliable. The problem in the Green Folder thread was NOT due to the MyProperties program.

I will be happy to give *any* detailed instruction you need. Just ask.

Thank you for all your help. I have relayed all messages and hope that she can follow your instructions. I will return if she has any problems. It may take a few days before I know, she doesn't contact me every day or read her mail daily.

Edited by WyllyWylly to remove email request. See the <!rule=10>Rule 10<!/rule>.

If she has Internet access, you can have her post here. I would gladly walk her through ANY of the paths that she would like to take.

Mark -

LOL! OK, OK!! I thought the thread excessively answered the question anyway!

But, you know me, I will happily keep writing more in here! Cheers.
