Internet-style message quoting (Outlook XP SP2, WinXP SP1)

    Greetings.

I'm trying to get Internet-style quoting working, so when I reply to a message, the original text appears

    > like this.

In tools-options-email options, I've set both the 'on replies and forwards' drop downs to 'prefix each line of the original message', and I've put a '>' character folowed by a space in the 'prefix each line with' box. I've also turned off Word as the email editor, and I've set tools-options-mail format-message format' to 'plain text'.

Still when I reply to a message, the original message appears in the new message window with a blue line on the extreme left hand side. Not a '>' to be seen anywhere.

Outlook is in corporate-workgroup mode, connected to Exchange Server.

What do I have to do to make this work?

    Thanks --

    I can shed some light on it without quite solving it <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

First it happens in stand-alone Outlook as well - it is not an exchange or corporate issue.
Second - it occurs only when you reply to an HTML formatted message.
(If you reply to a text message all your settings are honored.)

I vaguely remember that there was a setting like "Reply to HTML messages in HTML" - but I couldn't find it when I hunted for it.

Well, I tested it and your analysis is right on. Text emails work fine, it's only the html ones that don't quote properly. Armed with this knowledge, I dredged up the following kb article (its a registry hack):

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q307594
OL2002: Users Can Read Nonsecure E-mail as Plain Text

    And also this:

    http://www.slipstick.com/dev/code/zaphtml.htm
To convert incoming HTML messages to plain text or Rich Text format

Haven't tried these yet. I'll let you know.

OE has the reply to html in plain text... OL does not.

The blue line is the reply indicator for HTML - you can't change it to > without changing the format of the message first. The easiest way is to open message, edit | edit message, save, reply. zaphtml and the other tricks often make a mess of all mail.
