    Email NDR

    I am trying to send an email to a client of ours and keep getting an NDR (see attached)

    I have performed an nslookup for the mx records for the domain arup.com and get the following results;

    Non-authoritative answer:
    arup.com MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mailhub2.arup.com
    arup.com MX preference = 30, mail exchanger = mailhub3.arup.com
    arup.com MX preference = 90, mail exchanger = fallback.mail.pipex.net
    arup.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = ovemailhub1.arup.com
    arup.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = ovemailhub2.arup.com
    arup.com MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mailhub1.arup.com

    I can telnet to all of the above on port 25 apart from ovemailhub1 and ovemailhub2. As far as I can see it tries to deliver via the ovemailhubs and then gives up without trying the others.

    Any ideas how I can force it to use the other mx records?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Email NDR

    If the hosts with an MX record of 10 are reachable then you won't try the others as they have a higher MX preference.

    I assume that you can't change the MX preferences as these are coming back from a name server.

    How about adding entries in your local hosts file for ovemailhub1.arup.com and ovemailhub2.arup.com and pointing these at an unreachable address, this should cause your software to try the servers with a preference of 20.

    Edited by StuartR to add... The best solution would be to get your client to fix their DNS records themselves of course.

    Re: Email NDR

    The two ovemailhub entries are unreachable frmo our site but the rest aren't. It looks like it tries the entries with a cost of 10 that are unreachable and then gives up.
