Excel Shortcuts broken (Office 2000)

I have a user who has several shortcut files on his desktop. Normally, clicking one would open that file in Excel. Today, he 'accidentally' highlighted every icon on his desktop and tried to open every application at once. After closing everything, his Excel shortcuts won't work properly. Clicking one opens Excel and displays the message "Cannot find the file C:________ (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." Each subsequent click opens a NEW instance of Excel - and another message. Strangely, there is no problem accessing any file through File/Open... - it's just the shortcuts that don't work.

I've tried reboot, reinstall, etc. Any ideas?

Try the following :

From your user's Start Menu, select Run and enter the following

pathexcel.exe /regserver

where path is the path to the Excel executable, normally C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice

Just tried it. Got the same message (Cannot find the file C:.... ). This seems to be more than a shortcut problem. The system is not recognizing anything in the format "excel.exe / filename".

Thanks anyway, Andrew.

Did you have a look at the Shortcut Properties to see what, if anything, is munged? Does the user have so many Excel file shortcuts that it's a big deal to delete and recreate then from File Explorer?

Not very many. And everything in the shortcuts seems to be fine. Apparently, it's actually NOT the shortcuts that are the problem. I get the same error message if I double-click an Excel file in the explorer. Unless I open a file from WITHIN Excel, I get nowhere.

The file associations seems to be ok. I dunno...

I think you're in the ballpark, Andrew. That seems to be generally the area of the problem - just not specifically. The double-quotes, etc. are all in place as they should be.
Thanks,

Andrew's first suggestion was correct, but the commandline needs quotes:

Start, run,
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Regserver

Quotes mandatory, Note you may have to change the path.

It should fix your problem.

If none of the other rescue options work, try tools / options / general / settings / Ignore other applications - it needs to be unchecked. What you've described sounds to me as though that is the problem.

BROOKE! You nailed it! That little checkmark was the whole problem. (I never would have found it.) Thank you - and thanks to everyone else who responded.
