    Cannot locate C: drive (I don't know)

I have a computer with Windows XP installed but it reboots continually. I got it to boot off of a Windows 98 startup diskette, but on the DOS screen when I typed in C: and pressed ENTER it said that the drive was not found. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Ken

Sounds like your hard drive was formatted with NTFS. The Win98 boot disk won't allow you to read an NTFS drive.

The question is why did you boot it from a floppy?

Try SAFE MODE by pressing F8 when the computer first starts to boot. The right time is usually right after the BIOS POST screen finishes and the PC speaker beeps. Let us know.

Thanks for responding. I tried starting in Safe Mode but it kept rebooting, again and again. In fact I was able to come up with about 5 boot options, for instance "startup in a diagnostic mode". Every one just resulted in another reboot.

Thanks for responding. When I booted from the CD it kept rebooting, again and again. I read in the XP manual that if you cannot boot from the CD, to use a floppy startup diskette of version Win9x.

You didn't say anything about the computer in question, but since WinXP is very sensitive about memory AND I've seen the reboot problem before, resulting from a bad stick of RAM, can you try that? If you have more than one stick of memory, remove all but one. If it still doesn't boot, shutdown and swap for another stick. If you still don't succeed, maybe you could "borrow" a known good stick from someone or another machine to try. It may turn out not to be memory, but it's worth a short try.

I would check to see if your BIOS is recognizing the C: drive properly. Hit "del" or "f1" depending on your BIOS when starting up, then check to see if your HD is there and properly configured.
