Curve when lines cross (Win 98 Visio 2002)

How do you get a curve when two connector lines (unavoidably) cross? i.e. when you are connecting two shapes and it is impossible to avoid crossing a line connecting other shapes. I have tried to show what I want to do in the attached GIF.

When using the connector tool I think it does what you need automatically... depending on your settings, it just may look very small on your page. Attached I've zoomed in a little.
    hope this helps
    have fun

Re: Curve when lines cross (Win 98 Visio 2002)

I am very new to Visio, and am self-taught in using it i.e. I don't know much about it!. Although I have occasionally used the connector tool, it usually does some weird angles, so I tend to draw the lines and arrows between shapes myself. I will obviously have to investigate the settings further now I know it can do what I want.

    Hi Eggles

I am running Visio 2000 but I tink it is still appllicable under hte 98 version.

Goto File/Page Setup/Layout and Routing in the Line jumps box make sure the Add Line jumps Selection is set to "Horizontal lines" and not "None".
    cheers

Re: Curve when lines cross (Win 98 Visio 2002)

Whoops!!! Sorry - I didn't mean to insult you.

I tried your suggestion and it unfortunately didn't work. I selected the setting you suggested, and then clicked on one of the shapes and held down shift while clicking on the other. Then chose for Visio to 'connect the shapes'. The line that the program drew didn't actually cross any horizontal lines (I have attached a PDF of the chart to show what i mean), but it did cross two vertical ones. So I deleted the line, checked the vertical line box, tried again, and it still didn't do the little arc(s). I then tried letting Visio draw the line first, THEN change the settings. Still no joy. There must be something I am doing wrong, but I don't know what.

In the attached PDF, the line I am trying to draw - drawn where I want it to go - is obvious. When I let Visio draw the line, it is roughly in the same place, but located lower on the page so that it actually crosses two vertical lines. Any more suggestions?

Re: Curve when lines cross (Win 98 Visio 2002)

    Hi again

I have replicated your flowchart in the attached. Is it what you wanted?

I see your problem I think. The line from the Credit Note box positions itself below the YES line and the line to the Sales Box thus creating a line with double loops on it. To overcome this make sure the pointer is selected, click on the line, click on the central handle and drag the line to above the double lines. This will cause the YES line to loop over the line from the Credit Note box.

    Does this overcome your problem?

    Regards

Yes, this is exactly what happens when I let Visio connect the two shapes, EXCEPT no loops show up at all, even when I have the settings you recommended. I grabbed the middle handle and pulled it ABOVE the two vertical lines it crossed so that it would only cross one horizontal line (as in BOTH yours and my attachment). But I still didn't get it looping.

I have never been able to get a loop anywhere. I don't have Visio at home where I am now, but tomorrow at work, I will start off a brand new flow chart and see if I can get any loops showing.

PS. How did you get the reply attachment as a Word doc?

Re: Curve when lines cross (Win 98 Visio 2002)

    Eggles hi again

OK we seem to be making some progress.

Check again that your Page Setup is as shown in the attached. ie File/Page Set Up

Re: How did you get the reply attachment as a Word doc?

Open new Word document Insert/Object then just select the *.vsd file you wish to insert. If you want the inserted flowchart to update as you change it make sure you click Link to file. PS this can cause problems if documents are being viewed over an intranet.

    Good luck

    Eggles

Hi again again. I have just checked the Visio help. Have you looked at this? I suggest you do a search on "Line jumps on connrctors". This is very comprehesive and details how loops are to behave. ie on vertical. horizontal or last adedd lines etc.
    cheers
