    HTML, VBScript, JavaScript or ASP... Is it possibl (FP 97-2002)

    OK I am not sure about all of that but:

    Is it possible to have an e-mail message programmed with some code that when it is opened it will send the e-mail and/or IP of the machine that opened this e-mail?

    I ask because I wonder what goes on when I get one of these HTML e-mails and it goes back to the Internet and grab the images that I truly don't need or want.

    I am considering opening these suspicious e-mails off line, when I am not connected, via my broadband connection, check them out and then delete them if they don't interest me.

    I want to do this off line simply because I think it is possible to send the e-mail or the IP and thus they know that my e-mail does have a human being behind it and thus it gets its value when it is sold or shared.

    If this were possible, what would the code be like? If I open the HTML code and I search for my e-mail, or search for the word send and then comment this code out, and I guess then I can open it safely on line after that! Is that a good idea?

    Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

    Hmmm.
    Another way of looking at it is for the sender to assume there is a postbox at the end of it purely because it has not bounced . . .

    And since when would a spammer have a concience that actually cared whether the email address they were selling was valid or not?

    You are right, but I am sure that a <font color=red> verified </font color=red> e-mail is better than just any <font color=blue>me@someplace.com </font color=blue>.

    And the fact that there is a mailbox behind the e-mail is in fact evidence that it is connected and works.

    I am just trying my best to keep a handle on what happens to my in-box <img src=/S/boxedin.gif border=0 alt=boxedin width=25 height=20> and what I can do to stop what I can stop from happening. If I can understand it and work around the limitations that is <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>.

    Thanks for your excellent points.

    Yes, yes, yes. Every image you retrieve records your IP address in the source server's log automatically. This, in itself, might not give you away because if your ISP juggles IP addresses among subscribers, it can't very well be traced to you. However, if one suffixes the URL with a parameter, then that will be logged to. So... if i use a spamming program to customize the image tags like this:

    <IMG href="http://images.mysite.com/half-off-today.gif?wassim@domain.com">

    then you're nailed. Your plan of opening the mail "offline" solves this problem, but might not always be practical.
