Allocating work among resources in a task (2000/SR-1)

Within a single large task with multiple resources having different calendars (various start dates) Project allocates the work equally among resources which has the effect of extending the task duraqtion. Resources that came on to the project sooner are idle extending the task duration. I can't find anyway to get project to allocate the work in a more practical fashion, it is more important to finsih the task sooner than it is to equally distribute the work.

I would suggest breaking the tasks into smaller subtasks and assign the resources accordingly. Have these subtasks roll up to one summary task representing the major task. The resource usage would then be more practical. You might want to investigate setting the tasks as fixed duration or review the rules on effort driven if Project is drastically changing the tasks duration.
