    Task Bar Empty

If your task bar doesn't show the tasks that are running you most likely are infected with the W32.Friendgreet.worm.

    Re: Task Bar Empty

    Hi Lief,

I would be quite suspicious that this was the same problem perhaps with an earlier version of the virus. The virus on my machine loaded several dll and exe files into C:Program FilesCommon FilesMedia. I seem to recall the description of the earlier version of this virus (actually a worm) on Symantec's site referenced some program similar to PMEDIA. However, that file wasn't present on my machine. I had files there like OTDOCK.DLL, OTGLOVE.DLL, and especially WINSRVC.EXE which was the program that my firewall detected trying to contact a web site I had never heard of (and later found out was some outfit in Panama!). That was the clue that started me looking for a virus, and my Norton AV detected it only after I used their so-called Intelligent Updater to download the very latest virus definitions.

By the way, with the virus there I couldn't even delete these programs -- probably because they were running all the time!

I followed Symantec's suggestions for removing the thing, but it was rather involved what with removing a whole bunch of things from the registry, etc. It was VERY dumb of me to have loaded this virus. <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>

It came as an ecard from a friend. I had just recovered from a mild heart attack and was receiving all kinds of emails from friends, so I clicked on a link in the email message and stupidly went on trying to get my "ecard." What a mess!
