Monitor display sometimes yellow

    I have a CTX 1785GMd monitor with 2 problems.
    1. A few times now, the background color of a display will go from white to a pale yellow or off white. I hear sort of a click when this happens. All the colors are then somewhat subdued. I was able to get the correct color back by turning the monitor off & on, but this has happened more than once.

    2. I have Win 98 set to turn off my monitor after 2 hours of inactivity. Up until about 2-3 weeks ago, it went into suspend mode (orange light) & would come back on if I pressed any key or moved the mouse. Now it turns off AND I have trouble turning it back on. I have to use the on/off button to turn it off, then on, several times. I'm not sure if this is a monitor or Win 98 problem, but by the time the monitor comes back on, everything is visible. i.e. it's not like coming out of suspend mode.

The monitor is about 6-7 years old. I leave the computer on all the time (but the monitor is set to shut off). Do you think the monitor is about to fail or is it something that I might be able to fix?

    Phil,
I would think that your monitor is the culprit in both cases. When the background colors start to "wash out" it usually means that one or more of the color guns are getting weak and unable to converge properly. You might try to demagnetize/degauss the tube (if your monitor has that feature) sometimes that helps to improve things. Coming out of suspend mode can be many things, but again, I suspect the tube. Best test is substitution with another monitor if one is available. Good Luck.

    Phil,

Its either your monitor or video card that are going.

Usually there isn't an easy way to tell, except to swap out either the card or the monitor and see if the symptoms remain.

Thanks, Bob. I did degauss & the first time it worked immediately; the seondf time it didn't. I'm still hopeful.

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 10-Nov-02 20:20. to improve my counting from 5 to 7[grin])
Hi Bryan:
Thanks for the info. I was hoping that the monitor would last longer than 7 years. After all, a TV lasts much longer. Think I'll try the video card first.

A TV may last longer, but it's not on 24/7 like your monitor is.

So, if your monitor is 7 years old and hasn't been off since you bought it, that's 61320 hours. Now, let's say you have your TV on 8 hours a day, to get to 61320 hours on, that's 21 years to get there.

I know, I know, it's not much consolation, but ya get what ya pay for from me

    Re: Monitor display sometimes yellow

I also have a yellowish white on one of my monitors, but tracked it down to a loose connection to the video card. I just use push in connections as screwing them in to time consuming for hardware changes.
When the connection is solidly seated the monitor is fine.

    Good luck,

Thanks to everyone. I'll have to find time to take it apart & reseat the video card (I have tight quarters & its a PITA ). But I'll give this a try first.
