    Hotmail freeze-ups

I am having a problem w/Hotmail on my home PC that's driving me nuts. Have contacted Hotmail support, to no avail, of course. (I could show you e-mails ....)
    Here's what happens:
I can get into Hotmail just fine; however, once I get past the sign-in screen, every successive screen (e.g., display Inbox, open a message, reply to a message, and so on) hangs up just when it appears to have finished loading. The status indicator at the lower left corner of the screen says "Done," but the dark blue progress bar on the lower right part of the screen is extended to its full length. During this time I can't do anything. This persists for 10 to 30 seconds, then it clears and I can do whatever it is I wanted to do. (Of course, the next step will start the cycle over again.)

    I'm using Windows 98 and IE5 on a Compaq Presario 5333 with a dial-up connection.

Further, this problem only occurs with Hotmail; it does not occur with any of the other web sites I habitually visit from home, nor does it occur with Yahoo!Mail.

Huge surprise: Hotmail support says it's a problem with my ISP; my ISP (Prodigy) says it's not at their end. At Hotmail's suggestion, I had Prodigy run tracert and ping Hotmail's server. They reported no problems; when I did it, I got timeouts.

Does anyone know what is going on?

It may not matter, because at this point I'm so disgusted with Hotmail's alleged "support" that I'm ready to chuck it and use Yahoo.

Hotmail = Microsoft, do you have any problems with other microsoft sites? The only thing I can think of is some of your advanced settings relating to cookies and/or trusted sites, you may check them out and see if it helps!

Hope that does you SOME good..

Maybe try turning images off? I always suspect that it's the communications with ad servers and other sites that cause these delays. Perhaps this will help.

No Pictures? Yes, it'll load at the speed of light, but what fun is that? There's another Option I'd try first.. Notice 6 entries up on the graphic provided, you've got a 'play animations' option. If you disable this, your browser 'shouldn't' even look for banner gifs, (at least not in thier entirety)...

    Re: Hotmail freeze-ups

Finally got a message from Hotmail support telling me to download IE 5.01 SP1, which I did (all 18 MB of it, took about 40 min via dialup). The first time I went to Hotmail using the new IE, everything was fine; the first time my wife used it, it started delaying again. Have passed back to Hotmail support, but not holding my breath.

A bit unscientific, but try it nevertheless if you can.

Click on any link on the partially downloaded page and immediately press the Stop Button.
