XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

Aagghhh - hope this is appropriate for WinXP forum

Attempted to use Clipart in Office XP and got the msg "Clip Organiser cannot complete the operation" and "Error in the DLL"
Had a quick search round and ended up with KB302375 which suggests I've an MDAC problem.

OK, what's MDAC, and has anyone any clue how to sort it ?? This sounds way out of my league

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

    Thanks, Leif

Not sure of it's relevant - my home box was a virgin XP, and Office was installed clean by me and I've seen no sign of unsuccessful MDAC install previously. I'm not using any of the progs KB255653 refers to

My first guess is that I've installed something which has over-written an MDAC component or two (or more) - my registry's full of errors mostly referring to ODBC, OLE areas etc but I'm daunted by what I might have done and what to do about it. If you feel that a reinstall of the MDAC components as per KB255653 might help without screwing something else, I'm more than happy to give it a whirl and post the results

What are MDACs and why are there many versions on my box ??

    Terror prevails

I think it may be worth holding off any action until someone more conversant with this than I can offer some advice.

MDAC installs the ADO object libraries, and different applications and suites can install different versions. Some apps like VB6, Office XP and SQL Server 2000 even install different *builds* of the same version! Then you get MSKB articles telling you not to use this one because that one is the latest. <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15> You can download the MDAC installer (2.7 is the latest, but 2.6 may be safer) and run it. It won't remove 2.1, which has a different file name, but it will update 2.5 or later and any program built to use 2.5 or later should be OK. Those built to use 2.1 should be unaffected.

MDAC stand for Microsoft Data Access Component. You can find out more about MDAC if you are interested at http://microsoft.com/data/

Now to check to see if your there are truly any problems with your MDAC install, you need a piece of software from Microsoft called Component Checker, which can be had at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm#CCinfo

Once you have downloaded it, read KB Article 301202 and KB Article 307255.

These should help you reinstall/reconfigure MDAC if there is a problem with it.

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

Thanks Bryan : i did d/load component checker last night, but I've VERY unsure what it's telling me. It's exposing many many registry errors, file not found, missing files etc etc and I don't know where to<safely> start. I didn't find it a particularly intuitive bit of software !!

Oooh-er : what (how) have I done and how can I resurrect things without deeply screwing up (further). Perhaps your sig is particularly appropriate for me !!

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

Cher Charlotte : approaching something that's intelligible to me, although what the 'eck an ADO is defeats me (oh for the heady days of DOS and Win3.11)

So it's OK and normal to see shed-loads of different versions of these MDACcy things. I think (before I get home to recheck) that my latest is 2.7 (reasonably new PC with XP preloaded, plus OffXP SBE) so ... if it is that, should I reload it ??

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

    Bryan,

If it is giving errors and missing files, I'd upgrade to MDAC 2.6 SP2. From what I've heard I'd stay away from 2.7.

Although on my XPP box, it says I have MDAC 2.0 even RIGHT after an upgrade to 2.6 SP2.

You said this is a clean install of XPH and Office, right?

Try and install MDAC 2.6 and see how that goes. I'm starting to get into waters that are deeper than I care to tread (IOW, I'm at the point where I don't know what I'm talking about) so I'll be quiet now and let the more knowledgeable folks talk.

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

    Phil,

If it was me, and bear in mind I can't leave things alone either, I'd probably upgrade to 2.6. The only reason being that I work with Access DBs and wouldn't trust my data access to beta drivers.

I wouldn't go to 2.7 unless you have something that specifically needs 2.7. IIRC, there are issues with 2.7 and some more common software. I don't remember what the issues are or what the software is. I know, not much help.

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

    Hi Bryan:
Thanks for the links. Since I have a knack for not leaving things alone, let me ask you & Charlotte something. I have Win 98SE. The ComCheck version that I have is 2.50.4613.0, Beta 1. Would you recommend that I update it or get a later version. Charlotte, I notice that you recommend not getting 2.7 yet. I'm wondering if I even need 2.6, as I haven't upgraded anything for awhile.

    Cheers,

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

Definitely upgrade to 2.6. Version 2.5 was quite solid in its final release, but 2.6 is what VB6, SQL Server 2000 and Office XP install by default, so at least go to that version. It won't break anything with 2.5 calls, but it gives you improvements that weren't there in earlier versions.

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

Many thanks to all you friendly gang. Didn't get a chance (domestic interruptions) to try things out last night, but there's plenty of food for thought.

Don't understand why though, if OffXP loads 2.6, I need to reinstall - is it likely that my original OffXP installation's become corrupt, and would 2.6 just "install" on top of whatever's there at the moment without exacerbating my difficulties ?

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

If you have 2.7 installed, I'm not sure you can install 2.6, but if you want to, you'd better start by uninstalling 2.7. I'm not sure, but the latest service packs for OXP or WinXP may put 2.7 on. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Re: XP Home - DLL error (SP1)

I don't think it does Charlotte.

After I ran the Component Checker on my XPP-SP1 box at home, it said the closest MDAC version I have 2.0!!!

    Needless to say, MDAC 2.6 SP2 is now installed there <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
