Downloading XLT turns to XLS (IE 5.5)

I am setting up a web site so some of the other folks in our group can download some XLT files. When I d/l using Netscape... the file stays the same with the same extension... XLT. HOWEVER... when I use IE to d/l, the file gets saved with the extension of XLS. Any ideas why? Thanks

Probably related to the way IE handles the .xlt file types. I suspect the MIME Content Type for .xlt files is the same as for .xls files, and IE just changes all the extensions to the default .xls.

If this really bothers you, you could likely create a new MIME type in the registry for .xlt files and then IE would work the way you want it.

Another possibility is a server setting. See this long thread concerning .PSD files for a case with similar symptoms.
