Shortcut Toolbar Delay

Does anyone know of a program that will delay the appearance of the Office Shortcut Toolbar (Office 2000) by a few seconds when it is set on autohide? When this toolbar is docked at the top of the screen it is irritating the way it pops up when you aim for the minimise button or the close button; similar irritations if it is docked on one of the other edges of the screen.

<img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Of course Dave is right if you want to dock the shortcut bar, but if you like it "hidden" as I do, I find that it only appears when I move the cursor quickly to the side of my screen (where mine is "hidden"), if I move the cursor slowly to the corner of my screen it does not appear at all. Works well for me.

I adopted Dave's solution, but I like having it hidden, I must learn to tame the cursor. Just thought someone might have written a utility to do this. Thanks to you both.

Just a thought. If you run with the Shortcut Toolbar hidden, and also hide autohide the System TaskBar, consider using the Quick Launch (QL) Toolbar in the TaskBar instead of the Shortcut TBar. The only significant annoyance (IMO) is that the rightmost icons in the QL ToolBar may become hidden (a

Hi John:
Actually, I like to use Quick Launch with as many hidden icons as possible. The menu pops up pretty quickly & then it doesn't use up much taskbar real estate. I tried the Office shortcut bar for awhile, but found that there was a slight delay before applications popped up; i.e. QL is faster & uses less resources. I never could get used to Autohide in the taskbar (or OSB). Guess I like to move my mouse too fast. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

But Phil, if the icons are hidden, I have to click twice to get at them. I see your point, John (about the shortcut bar, not the final curtain <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>). Maybe I'll give it another try. Most of the applications that I use frequently, I use shortcut keys for. It works great--until I forget the shortcut key. One thing I've NEVER found anyone using and I don't know why - Single Click option in Tools, Folder Options! Have you ever tried it, John? You could put desktop icons up and only require one click, but of course then you have the problem of open windows blocking your view of the icons. A guy can't win, can he? I've used single-click ever since it became available and MY biggest problem with it is when mousing-over file save or open windows and you pass over a file name!

Hmmm ... I'm gonna give it a try, BigAl, but my longstanding doubleclick habit will probably mess me up. And that option doesn't change items on the Taskbar which are already single-click. But since you bring this up, I guess I have to be more precise: it's not double clicking that bugs me, it's clicking and then moving the pointer and then clicking again to do one thing that bugs me. Yeah - you have to practice keeping your mouse pointer AWAY from objects and file names! I've been using single click for a long time and I love it. But I really DO have to try hard to keep my mouse pointer away from stuff so I don't highlight something I didn't mean to. For example, whilst downloading something from the web and drilling down in the "save as" windows, if you pass your mouse over a file name too slowly, the name of what you're downloading will accidently get modified. It's a challenge!

I tried the single click option for awhile. The problem I had was selecting an icon. I like to use the keyboard a lot, so if I'm going to rename something, I usually click it, then press F2. It was too hard for me to move the mouse over the icon, stop the mouse, & then use F2. The fraction of a second I saved by single clicking, I lost by having to wait while something loaded & then shut down. And what a thrill it was to try to move an icon that was a shortcut to a batch file & watch half a dozen apps load. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
