    strange TMP files

I helped a fellow today who was running out of space on his C drive. He is running WIN 95. We did a search for all TMP files and found over 10,000 files that had been created in the past 4 months. The file names were WNK****.tmp. The last four digits were random numbers and letters. The files were created one right after another - about one every minute. They took up 0 KB space each. What would have been creating these WNK****.tmp files?

How do you obtain Winkillr. Did a Google search, reached the description, clicked on the hand and reached a page that didn't have Winkillr on it.

    trebor,
WNK files are usually "wavelenght, n, k," math variables but are mostly appear as xxx.wnk. Below is a copy of a paper from google search showing some info and a program to eliminate them. How they are being generated is another question, but a virus is suspect.

    WinKillr
WinKillr is an indispensable new utility for Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Win95. It's a Windows program, but it has no window of its own. Instead it acts as a background "terminator" for any application to which it is assigned. When the application's time is up, either in elapsed time or when the computer clock reaches a specified time or date/time, the application is "killed". WinKillr v1.1's new user interface allows easier setup and maintenance of the .WNK files which control application program termination. Handy new features include allowing the target program to be launched in a minimized state and the ability to control programs executing from CD-ROM or other read-only media. The new Reset control will allow you to set up WinKillr as a "watchdog", terminating programs on public-access machines that are left running after users leave. A free demo version is available for download.

    Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code. See the Quick Guide.[/i] <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Michael,
I didn't follow that link all the way and I guess it has been purged from some locations, since it's getting kind of old, but I did find it here, http://www.sowest.net/roundup/sw5.htm and there were a few other sites listed under a google search for "Winkillr" You really have to drill down into some of them to find Winkillr at all.
