Exasperated with O2k2 (SP2) (O2K2 SP2 WinXPpro SP1)

i had a similar problem a couple weeks ago and y'all were most helpful to me then, so im hoping I can get this sorted soon too

im trying to import some contacts from a csv/xls file.

When the progress bar gets all the way across, Outlook hangs the whole system and I have to ctrl-alt-del a whole smacky-load of times to kill processes until it finds the offending one and then it shuts down and I can restart.

Last time I was having this problem, the culprit was CiceroUIWndFrame which someone here found a reference about it being related to text and speech and alternative inputs. I un-installed that in Office and restarted the computer and it worked. It's doing it again this time and Ive spent all afternoon tracing down through OXP and WinXP all the little settings and niglets about text-to-speech, speech recognition, alternative input, language bar and everything else. I've unloaded any add-ins and com add-ins I had in outlook. I've killed off most of the running processes in windows leaving me with bare operating system and outlook, and STILL it crashes when it gets to the end.

When I come back up and look in the folder that I was importing to, I get one contact in it, the first record in the xls file. I tried deleting the second record out of it, thinking maybe IT was bad, but it still happens. I tried saving as a csv and importing that, still always the same thing. I dont get the ciceroUIwndframe errors anymore, now it's Outlook that chokes and dies.

Another nagging problem Ive had with WinXP and Ive asked about this a couple times here in the lounge and no one can figure it out: dialog boxes that pop-up dont. they're usually modal, too so the system is waiting for a response from that dialog and it isnt going to get one cause I cant see it!

Sometimes it will appear if I ctrl-alt-delete and then cancel and come back to the desktop.

When this happens, taskman seems to "crash" too in the sense that it doesnt appear. if I go back to the security menu and click log off or shut down, it sits at the desktop waiting, and then usually I start tappity-tap-tapping ctrl-alt-delete and it starts to kill processes one at a time. after a couple are down the tubes, taskman WILL pop up on the screen, but I still can't click anything or DO anything other than continue ctrl-alt-deleting until finally something gets killed that's holding up the system and allows it to shut itself down.

I just don't get it. and I give up. Im gonna leave work early and hit happy hour and forget all about it until tomorrow when the boss says "is it done yet?" and I say no Id really rather not reinstall windows and office and everything else I have loaded on here at this point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Ouch - I sympathize. I had Excel do similar nasties (but I gave up and reinstalled (5 times <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>))

Can you just confirm something I think you wrote.

Can you take existing contacts (stored in Outlook), export them, and trigger the failure if you attempt a re-import?

    Well I just tried that....

and just rebooted cause it hung on me again so it's import AND/OR export that chokes and dies now. there are no traces of speech recognition, text-to-speech, alternative inputs and the like left, everything is disabled (including the spam killer, ouch) and it still happened. I think at this point Im going to start copying and backing up in preparation for a full rebuild

Import and Export work ok for me. Are you a local admin on your computer? If not, see if someone will set you up for a while. Try these processes with admin rights. While at this rights level you might run detect and repair (In Outlook Help). You'll need access to the install point or original CD. I've found D&R to be kind of lame compared to removing and re-installing. But at least it doesn't take long...

yeah I have administrator rights on this machine. I'll try repair and detect tonight when I get home as that's where my install CDs are.

    Thanks
