Underlining Tabbed entries in Word or PowerPoint (Word 2000 (SR 1))

I am using Word 2000 and unlike Word 97 which allowed you to set tools options to "don't underline tabs," it creates a solid underline for the entire line. I know you can set the format font underline option to words only, but then you have to go back and turn it off or else it continues to underline everything you type plus it does not underline the space between words. I would like to underline the header line titles for a tabbed list without the underline appearing under the blank space between tabbed columns.
Is there a feature in Word 2000 or PowerPoint 2000 that allows you to set this up?
    Thanks for any help.

You're best off entering your data, then going back, selecting the header paragraph, and applying formatting (or a style) to just that paragraph. Much easier than toggling formatting highly specialized formatting on and off as you go.

Thanks for your reply Jeff. Your suggestion is pretty much what we've been doing as a work around. I was wondering if an easier option, similar to Word 97, was available and gone undetected by my publishing staff. It's not a show stopper, just a slight aggravation requiring additional steps previously not necessary with Word 97.

    Hi Gerry:
I'm not aware of the option that you mention in Word 97 under Tools/Options. You can set tab leaders under Format/Tabs. And you can set underline to "words only" under Format/Font or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+W. You can turn it off by pressing Ctrl+Spacebar.
    Hope this helps.

Re: Underlining Tabbed entries in Word or PowerPoint (Word 2000 (SR 1))

Thanks for your response Phil. After receiving it, I found someone at work who still had Word 97 loaded. I too could not find the setting I'm talking about under tools/options. I guess I am loosing it. I am certain, however, that I had something set up whereby I could select an entire line and get it to underline the text (including space between words) without underlining the space between tabs. This also worked when using the earlier version of PowerPoint. I somehow got these results without having to select each header individually. Oh well, if Word 2000 can not do it, there is no use wasting much more time on it. Thanks again.

    Gerry:
I think there's more than one way to accomplish what you want. I don't know of any feature relating to underlines & tabs that is different in Word 2000 than in Word 97. Is it possible that you were using columns? Or a 3 column table, with bottom borders in the first & third columns only? For ideas, you might want to take a look at http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/TblsFl...nesInForms.htm.
    Hope this helps.

    Phil:
I was trying hard to forget about this perceived problem of mine, but you inspired me to press on. I tried again, without success, to duplicate what I believe I use to do with Word 97. Maybe it's time for a vacation. I appreciate your help and, although it did not provide the answer I was looking for, I found the site for which you provided me the URL very informative - I now have it on my favorites list for quick reference. I'm sure there are fellow loungers out there needing your help much more than me and I don't want to waste anymore of your valuable time. Thanks again Phil and if I ever come up with the answer, I will be sure to let you know.
