Problem with minimizing a window - Windows 98

When minimizing a window, the window closes instead of displaying the normal button on the taskbar.

    Any ideas?

It is a problem that occurs with any program - Word, Excel, etc.

A friend is experiencing this problem and asked me for help. I don't know if any specific incident caused this, but apparently it one of those "it just started happening" things. Could this be a virus?

He uses Windows 98 in a network environment and Office 2000.

There was a similar problem & solution reported in <!post=this thread,183816>this thread<!/post>. A program called PMEDIA was to blame.
    Hope this helps.

    WORM ALERT...

This is not a due to "program" called PMedia. This appears to be the FriendGrettings Worm.

    Please note the following quotes:

"It was discovered that this new installer modifies the taskbar in such a way that during installation you cannot switch to another program. This also results in icons disappearing from the taskbar. This does not result in any permanent loss of information."

    ______________________

"1. Click Start, and click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
    2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
    3. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun

    4. In the right pane, delete the following value:

    PMedia C:Program FilesCommon FilesMediawinsrvc.exe..."

    _____________________

So, PMedai is not a 'program', but only a Run registry key that points to one of the problem files: winsrvc.exe.

I highly suggest you send your friend to the Symantec site -- and not just have him remove the "PMedia" Run entry.

    Re: WORM ALERT...

Thanks for posting this, R2, and for replying in the other thread also. It appears I jumped to conclusions too quickly on this one. <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>
