QuickSearch from the Address bar (IE5+)

In response to a prior question in a different thread:

To quickly add a variety of search engines to your address bar, use the MS Web Accessories for IE5 -- which, despite the warnings, works fine in IE6. This is a small file -- 134 KB (1 min @ 28.8 Kbps) -- but it adds some nice little touches that MS seems to have decided to NOT incorporate into the general release of IE6.

This sticks a shortcut QuickSearch.exe in your Links folder. To make a quick link to a(n) MSKB article, use the letter "q" as the shortcut, and then the Custom URL line needs to be:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...id=kb;en-us;%s

You will find that QuickSearch does not like you to cut and paste long lines in there. If you want, you can put a bogus line under URL, then jump to regedit and paste the long line in here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchUrlq
(Default)=

(Obviously for those who feel comfortable editing the registry).

To search for a given MSKB article from the address bar, type a "q" (no quotes), then a space, then enter the article number in question. You are taken directly to that article.

R2--

Thanks for this- and a number of your other tips.-I always appreciate useful things that MS didn't do--I have an awfully long list . Have you had a look at Dave's Quick Search

Yes. It seems to incorporate many of the functions that QuickSearch uses. You can imitate it by simply activating the Address bar on your task bar, setting the default to Google, and then utilizing QuickSearch.exe to access various search engines.

Of note, since MS recently modified the MSKB, I have removed the "Q" from the URL line. HOWEVER, this shorter format is also SUPPOSED to work:

support/microsoft.com/?kbid=%s

But, every time I try to access an MSKB article using this method, I cannot find the page! So, for now, use the longer URL I posted above.

I got the tip from you originally--and it worked the day I set it up. Then a couple days later I noticed the same thing--thanks for the adaptation to the post "Q" convention.
