Sorting Favorites (IE 6, SP 1)

THe inability to easily sort favorites continues to be absent from IE 6.
Earlier today, I exported the favorites from one installation of IE 6 and imported them into an installation of IE 5.5, which I have subsequently updated to IE 6 SP 1.

A bunch of favorite folders is not sorted alphabeticaaly, rather, they seem to be included in chronological order of creation.

Is there a way to force Favorites to sort?

Howard,

If you open your favourites menu in IE and right click, down at the bottom is an option to Sort By Name.

Click that and your favourties will be sorted in alphabetical order. Whoever, it will ony sort the current "menu" If you wan the sub-folders sorted, you will need to do each one individually.

Howard, Take a look at this: http://www.jsiinc.com/subd/tip1700/rh1759.htm. It may do what you want.

Re: Sorting Favorites (IE 6, SP 1)

Both of those suggestions will likely work for you.

I suspect you realize that you can manually drag and drop links in the Favorites pane to your heart's content.
____________________________________

However, for more extensive editing of your Favorites, the MS "Organize Favorites" applet must be one of the worst designed items ever installed on a PC. Antoher option to help you Organize Favorites is to create a shortcut IN your Favorites TO your Favorites folder -- and have it open in the "Explorer" mode. Now you can then drag and drop using the main window pane PLUS the Explorer pane. This is usally much quicker and convenient.

On your Desktop, create a New > Shortcut with the command line as this:

C:WINDOWSEXPLORER.EXE /e,root,C:WIndowsFavorites

Modify the path to your Favorites folder as desired. Name this shortcut something simple like "Explore Favorites". The icon may look correct, but it is not. Click to Modify the icon and Browse into: C:WINDOWSSYSTEMShell32.dll. (Modify this path for Win2K-XP). The LAST icon in there is the Favorites folder.

Lastly, move this shortcut to the TOP of your Favorites pane in IE. Now you can QUICKLY organize your Favorites using drag and drop in an Explorer view window.

NOTE: this technique is actually for MOVING favorites shortcuts into various sub-folders and whatnot. It will NOT specifically alter the way the Favorites pane is viewed in IE. Use the methods above -- and then drag and drop within the pane -- to organize that view.

You know you can open your Favorites folder in (single pane) Explorer view by holding down Shift and clicking Organise Favorites....?

Edited to add:
This is actually a quick and easy method of finding the full and correct path to your Favorites folder!

Ouch! Yes the Shift key works for me!! I think I know that, but like many things... eh, I forgot!

Can you make the Shift key permanently active when users click Organize Favorites?? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Sorting Favorites (IE 6, SP 1)

Dragging and dropping does no good as IE periodically unsforts them anyway.
This has been a problem in every version of IE that I can recall.

It does no good to sort in the Explorer Window, IE Still does not honor that sort.
Are you suggesting that I fake it by using a single shortcut to the Explorer Window?

Other than permanently holding your finger on the Shift key, no <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I did try a quick Google to see if anyone had come across an answer - but to no avail.
But I did come across Switch Manager Pro if someone is looking for (yet) another way to organise open windows/favourites/searches . . .

Re: Sorting Favorites (IE 6, SP 1)

Howard,

It sure sounds like either your IE installation is hosed <img src=/S/hosed.gif border=0 alt=hosed width=73 height=24> or there has been some sort of custom install with the Internet Explorer Administration kit, which has disabled that function.

I have IE6 SP1 on both WIn2K and WInXPP and they both have the 'Sort By Name' option in the right click menu.

Based on your other thread, I'd say that your IE installation is <img src=/S/hosed.gif border=0 alt=hosed width=73 height=24>

Re: Sorting Favorites (IE 6, SP 1)

In all my years of using IE, I have never had IE automatically rearrange my Favorites. However, I certainly believe that it would do that!! Typical of a Windows product..

As I now sit here and try to click "Sort by Name" in my Favorites list, I notice that it is MISSING from the Favorites Explorer pane, but NOT from the Favorites drop-down Menu!!

Hmmm... I always thought it was in both. Maybe I was mistaken... or maybe IE6sp1 broke this??

Howard,
Are you having problems with the sort being displayed in the "Menu" listing or the "Favorites Pane" on the left side of the screen?

These are BOTH sorted when using the sort within the menu, BUT you MUST have the Favorites Pane turned OFF, when doing the sort.

Also the use of the shift key will ONLY work if you select "Organize" from the MENU, NOT the Favorites Pane.

Re: Sorting Favorites (IE 6, SP 1)

Good points. Yes, the "Organize..." button at the top of the Favorites 'Explorer pane' is NOT the one that you use the Shift key with -- it is the Favorites Menu drop-down. It is also the Favorites Menu drop-down that has the "Sort by Name" entry.

Dave, was Sort by Name EVER in the Favorites Explorer pane??? Thanks.
