Mail Merge (Word 97)

I want to prevent unauthorized users making changes to merge letters.
Changes made without understanding their significance could have at worst
have legal consequences for the company; and might introduce sloppy
English and bad grammar, reflecting on our standards. I have tried using
tools/protection but the protection prevents the merge taking place. How
can I prevent my staff making changes to the merge letters?
Is there a solution to this?

Yes there is - although, as always, a determined enough staff member will get around it.

Automate the mailmerge and add the protection to the completed merge documents, rather than the template.
This works where the mailmerge is 'standard' and can be automated.
Any single purpose template could be automated either by a 'learnt' macro or from go-to-whoa VBA as it opened. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>
The advantage of the second form is that you could go directly to print-and-close so that modifications were fully out of the question.
