    Outlook Migration (XP/2002)

    Hi.
I've been installing and configuring a P2-400 512 MB RAM system, so that I can move my wife's system to this, from an older P2-300 with 256 MB RAM. The new PC has Win2K, with all relevant Service Packs. The older system has Win ME.

All applications work just as they did on the older system.

    Except Outlook XP.

I tried the simple way, by copying the outlook.pst file from the source to the destination, and connecting that PST to Outlook for her.

Only one problem: while Outlook services two email addresses, one MSN and one from our hosting service - both POP3 - and while on the older system both email accounts send and receive with ease, the MSN account will not send or receive from the newer (destination) PC! I checked and made sure that all options in Outlook Mail Accounts are exactly, totally the same.

Then I tried to Back up the source's PST and Restore from that file, which I also moved to the target system.

Again, the MSN email will not work. It keeps asking for the Password. We know the PW is right - it works on the source PC.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on here?

[Should I try Office 11 beta on the target PC <BG>?]

Thanks, all, for any help you can give.

Could there have been a little add-on that made MSN mail accessible in Outlook?

    Did you change ISPs?

Maybe compare IE's Internet Options/Advanced tab on the two machines for any minor protocol or authentication differences.

Thanks for the suggestions ... no, nothing different in terms of add-ons. Nor did I change ISPs; same old Verizon DSL for > 3 years. And the two IEs are as close as they're gonna get, given that the older PC is Win ME and the newer one is Win 2K.

I pored over these two setups - side-by-side - using PC Anywhere, so that I could compare them on the same monitor. I saw nothing that could have made this an issue.

    This should have been a no-brainer - perect for me, since most of my brain is still in the 60s <img src=/S/cloud9.gif border=0 alt=cloud9 width=25 height=23> ...

I would hate to wipe the whole thing out and start fresh, but am willing to do that, since the PC hasn't been used in production yet. I'm almost willing to go to XP Pro in lieu of 2K, if I thought that would make a difference.

    Thanks again,

Hmmm, since your ISP lets you at its mailbox, it probably isn't a network settings problem... Can you retrieve MSN mail from the new machine with Outlook Express?

Outlook Express is a great idea. I'll have to try that, after all email is retrieved from the older PC first. that way, I can send only test messages and not interfer with the person's usual email. They're still working on the old PC.

BTW, I even tried the save settings wizard - saved first to the server, then on the new PC, brought them back, so to speak. Even that failed.

    Re: Outlook Migration (XP/2002)

    On a related note:

Say I have a primary PST, called Outlook 3.pst. But I created a new profile, to solve some beta issues in Outlook, and that profile - which now has all my email accounts attached to it - created an Outlook4.pst. It defaults to that one, and all email comes into that one's inbox.

Am I missing something, or would it be simply renaming my primary PST Outlook 3 to 4 and restarting Outlook, to use the original one?

Or, should I drag the folders from 3 to 4, then close and stop using 3?

I can do either one, but want to approach this the best way. I did create a new Profile, to resolve issues in that Outlook 11 Beta, and suspect that the outlook3.pst would still have those problems ... so moving files and folders to 4 and then closing 3 makes more sense to me.

Again, what am I missing here?

    Thank you all,

You're right on the money, Jefferson.

I did set hers up to use OE instead of Outlook, and she gets all email with no problems.

    Now, I've even - maybe, since it's a beta <img src=/S/bouncenburn.gif border=0 alt=bouncenburn width=31 height=31> - solved my own problems so I can continue using the beta of Outlook 11.

    Again, thanks to all.
