Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

I have been told that if I exceed a certain number of items in a personal file (1,000 I believe), Outlook will lock-up and refuse to allow you to open your personal files. Anyone else had this problem, and if so, what is the solution?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

I believe the pst limit is based on size (2 gigs). We have run into it for several users. I split their personal folder into two, then open both in Outlook. Instead of just seeing "Personal Folder" they see two (these users organize everything into folders, so one may be marked "A-K" and the other "L-Z" depending on how they were split). There is also a pst crop tool available from microsoft (see mskb article 296088), but I have not tried that because it "truncates the file". Good luck.

Thanks. My current problem is that I can't open the personal files at all! Any suggestions?

Try running the inbox repair tool on the pst file. You can download it or find it on your PC (I use windows 98 and it's located at crgram files common files system mapi 1033 95). The file name is scanpst.exe.

According to MS, the maximum number of items in a .pst file is 16,384 -

No luck with either program. The ScanPST said myu Inbox was OK, and the truncate program won't work with anything that doesn't have at least 2 Gig (My files are at 1.15).

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

The only thing I can think of is that I was cleaning up my hard drive the other day, and accidently deleted (into the recycle bin) my .PST file. I immediately undeleted it, and thought all was well.

Just a thought; use Explorer Search to see if there are more than one pst files on your hard drive, in case you reinstated an old empty system default pst instead of the active one. (Since I did that once!)

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

If you could access it OK after doing that, I would guess that is unrelated.
The attributes of your .pst haven't accidently been set to Read-Only?

You didn't delete anything else while you were at it? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> - might be worth running a repair from Add/Remove.

Do you get any specific error message?

What Outlook version are you running? - the Subject has been truncated to Outlook 200 !

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

If you click the allow large tables option you can have 65,000 + items. I actually have a mailbox , saved to a .pst, for backup with about 12,000 items at present and still growing. I'm clearly growing. It is irritating that you have fo find out this info by accident,; the mailbox I referred to has one folder with 11,000 messages in, so if I hadn't noticed the upgrade to large tables by chance I would be well and truly hosed!

Which raises the question, where do I get the item count? I can get the pst folder sizes, but don't see where the item count somes from. (My PST is about 122 Megabytes, and I do not keep attachments with items.)

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

I think there's a typo in that article. 16,384 is the limit for the number of items in a single folder, which I often reach for Deleted Items so I'm very familiar with that magic number (actually, I only get 16,383 - I was ripped off). As long as messages are sorted into different folders, you can store many more than that.

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

You get a weird error message when you try to add the 16,384th message ("unknown error"), but you don't lose access to anything. Personally, I know it would be unwise to let myself accumulate several tens of thousands of messages in a single folder, so I have never enabled large table support!

Re: Maximum size of Personal Folders (200)

The item counti is simple. Add up the number of items in each folder (messages or contacts or tasks) and add the number of folders. So if you have 16,383 items in the deltedt items folder you add that to the number of folders, one, to get the total of 16,384,
