    Win XP Search function (Latest)

Would be very grateful if anyone could put their finger on a possible cause of the following problem:

As a technical translator I used to use Word's Open (file) function to search large numbers (just over 1GB/3000 (mainly Word) files) of past documents (terminal glossaries and translations) for particular terms or phrases. Since the Open function in Word XP no longer allows this, I've had to turn to Win XP's Search function to achieve the same thing. However, this very often slows my computer to such a crawl that it has effectively crashed. I'm using a reasonable machine: 800MHz Athlon + 640MB of RAM + plenty of unused hard drive (about 20GB free).

Since the Open function in Word XP no longer allows this...

In Word 2000/2002 there is Tools drop-down list in the right side of the toolbar in the Open window (closer to upper rigit corner). Choose Search from this list and follow the dialog.

Thanks very much for your help. Let's hope the modified Word function works better than the Win XP for me!
