Save Changes on Close

Office 2K/Windows 98 upgrade
I'm not sure if I have a corrupt normal.dot or what but if I click close on an unnamed document the dialogue pops to save changes and I can put in a file name. If I access an existing file and make changes and then close, the dialogue does not pop up giving me the chance to discard the changes or cancel the close. It seems to work properly in Excel.

I can't remember where the check-box is for prompt for save on close is. Getting old is hell.

Hi Jeanne,

What you are describing sounds like a pretty common virus.

There isn't an option for prompt to save changes on files other than the Normal.dot. It should always prompt you to save if the file has been dirtied (changes made).

Your best bet is to update your virus scanner and do a full scan on all files.

Sorry - I don't think I read your post properly.
I think what you are saying is that you can close an altered document without being given the option to Save or Cancel?
I agree with BAM above - there is unlikely to be an option that would let you merrily discard your work without warning.

Hold on -just found this...

File/Versions: there is a checkbox there to select Automatically save a version on close - could that be it?

OK, did a virus check-negative and versions (used to save more than one version of a file in the same file name) is unchecked

Must have been a corrupt normal.dot. Renamed normal.dot and restarted Word. Problem appears solved. Thanks for your ideas!
