History/address bar will not clear (6.0)

For some reason clearing the history in IE does not clear the autcomplete addresses on the address bar (or the history pane, for that matter). I am guessing there must be some corruption in IE. Does anyone know what might be happening? Is there a way to clear the history manually?

I believe you mean the typed URLs. You can edit the registry to clear this list.
The registry key is : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerTypedURLs

Generally, "Clear History" does clear the Typed URL's. What exactly are you seeing in the Address bar? My guess is NOT web sites. Can you post an image?

No, I do see addresses/the URLs, and all the items remain in the history list.

I am not sure at what point clear history stopped working. I can grab an image with alt+printscreen, but I am not sure how to post it here.

PrintScreen paste into Paint SaveAs... .jgp. Browse and attach.

That means, Clear History is NOT clearing History... Do you know the path to your History folder?

Also, how many days do you save your History and how old is the oldest entry??

right, the history does not clear. The question is why.

I do not know the path to my history folder. What would this be called under Win 2000 and IE6?

Under Win2K, this is user-specific. Start/Search for "History" -- and how many you find. Also, make sure that the one under your User Name is the one that you are seeing in the drop-down box.

The answer to "Why" is always the most difficult. First we need to know exactly WHAT is happening.

Again, how many days of History do yo save? How old are the entries you are seeing in the drop down list?

For some reason I can only find an IE5.0 history folder when I search by history. It has a 2000 data so obviously that cannot be the right location. Is there a file name or extension type that I could search for?

Re: History/address bar will not clear (6.0)

I am not sitting at a Win2K box right now, but the usual structure is:

    Cocuments and Settings---------Local SettingsHistory

where --------- is your user name. If there is more than one user, there will be more that one History folder. Within the History folder is a sub-folder named History.IE5. So the entire line looks like this:

    Cocuments and Settings---------Local SettingsHistoryHistory.IE5

However, the History.IE5 folder is generally HIDDEN on a Win9x system. I am not sure if that is the case for Win2K.

Also, how comfortable are you with navigating and making simple registry modifications that can be easily reversed?
