    Large Fonts/Screen Scroll

I've been searching through this board and can't find it. I've got a Win98SE machine that's been running at 1024x768 for ages w/16 bit color depth. The only thing the machine is even used for is when my son is here and both of us need the web. I rebooted it this morning as I occasionally do and all of a sudden the stuff on the desktop, including any windows I open, seems much larger, as if I had changed the resolution to 800x600 or less. Properties says it's still at 1024x768, 16 bit, but when I mouse to one of the edges of the screen, the whole screen scrolls and I just can't remember what could have caused this problem. I've checked the Advanced tab in display properties and even the Accessibility app in Control Panel and can't find it.

Can you help an old guy with Win98 CRS, please? By the way, it isn't the monitor, because I also have another machine on the same monitor using a KVM switch and that computer is OK.

    Hi Al

When was your son last on the web with this machine?
To me, it sounds suspiciously like he may have downloaded and installed a "prank" program.
You could do a search for any files/programs with a recent date stamp.

    Have a Great day!!!

I'm the only one who has used the machine lately, Ken, but I did take your advice and searched for recent dated files without anything out of the ordinary. This being a spare machine has NO email program active on it and we use IE5 to browse the web. It's also got AVG installed so I guess I better ask it to do a full scan.

Just to clarify - it's like a utility for the visually impaired has been installed but I can't find it. I checked the W98 built-in under Accessories to make sure it's turned off and it is. When you mouse to a screen edge, the screen scrolls with you for about 20-25% so it's pretty big. Thanks for the advice.

Well, if that don't beat all! This morning we had a one hour power outage, which is very rare for our power company. Of course, I went around with my flashlight turning off my three computers. When the power came on and I rebooted the offending machine, the "visually impaired" phenom was GONE like the wind! What the.....? Sorry for the clutter folks.

Glad you solved the problem Al, or the power outage did - but if you experience this again it sounds to me like the desktop properties/Appearance have been altered. I alter mine to be various sizes and colors on different machines, just makes reading the screen easier (for me). Its a simple fix, just restore the defaults in that area, and bingo back to normal. <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>

Yeah, except that's what's so strange. I worked and worked on just that area, including setting everything to "Windows Standard" and nothing seemed to help. Of course, I may have hit upon something that required a re-boot without telling me so, and the power down caused by the electrical failure caused MY changes to get implemented. I still wish I knew which "Appearance" characteristic would cause the screen to be "scrollable," as if it were a utility for the visually impaired. Such is life.....
