Converting WP8/9 docs. to Word (Word 2002)

How can I convert WordPerfect 8.0 and 9.0 docs to Word. Surely, Microsoft has come out with a converter since Word Perfect 6!?!?!? I have users who cannot open any of their WordPerfect docs in Word and opening them individually in WP and "saving as" will be a monumental task! I have made sure all all converters are installed from the Office CD and checked the Knowledge Base. Must I purchase a third-party utility? <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

As far as I know, Microsoft has not released a converter for WordPerfect documents higher than version 6.0. There are a number of threads with recommendations on bulk conversion tools here in the Lounge. Good luck in your quest.

Up through Word 2000, it was possible to simply rename a WordPerfect (or other) document to have the ".doc" extension, and then Word would convert it while opening it. Why does that approach no longer work in Word 2002?? Especially since the format of Word files has not changed between Word97, Word2000, and Word2002 ??? (At least, what I create at home in Word 2002 I can open in Word97 at work.)

I've never tried that method (renaming a WordPerfect document with a .doc extension). When you say it doesn't work in Word 2002, do you get an error message that it's not a valid Word document, or... what exactly happens? If you turn on the "Confirm Conversions" setting on the General tab of Tool>Options..., you might have the opportunity to instruct Word to use its WordPerfect converter. Not sure if this will help you or not.
