Characterisics of linked tables (Win ME/Access 97)

I have a linked table in the "back-end". I modified the format of a field in the table, but the modification did not modify the linked table in the "front-end." This surprised me. My concept was that the link established contact with one and only one table. Are there two tables? Why aren't modifications reflected in the "front-end"?

There is only 1 table, and it is in the BE. Modifying the format of a field won't change how it is displayed in existing forms, as that is controlled by the format property of the control, not the underlying field.

Agreed, but the format modification that I made is in the table's design view in the BE. In other words, in the BE, the data type is currency, fixed format. In the front end, in the table's design view, the data type is currency, but the format is currency. It seems that they should be the same when seen from the design view of the table, either in front end or back end.

If you try to open a linked table in design view, you get a message that says something to the effect "This is a linked table with some properties that can't be modified". If you didn't see this message, then you table in the frontend is NOT linked to BE, it is a separate table by itself.

Mark - Thanks for the attention. (Again)

I get the message "This is a linked table with some properties that can't be modified." Apparently, the format property is one that can be modified from the front end. It still seems strange in a linked table that the modifications to the BE are not reflected in the front end.

Well, I learned something. You can modify the format property of a field in a linked table in the FE! I'm not sure how to "resync" it with the backend.

There are some things you can modify that apply only to the link rather than to the table design itself. So to get them back in sync, drop the link and recreate it.
