clip art is inserting as in in-line graphic (Office 2000 (happens on XP &

I have searched the Microsoft database and here (woody's lounge) till I'm blue from typing! I'm probably using the wrong terminology but here is what is happening. This last week when I insert clip art, it is coming in as an in-line (correct term?) graphic. You know it has the black handles that face inward when you select the graphic, rather than a free floating type graphic. I can't for the life of me figure out: a) how it got that way and how to change it back. I was working on a client's computer (Win 98, Office 2000 sm. business edition) and then sent the document to my computer (Windows XP, Office 2000 Professional) to finish formatting it when I noticed this bizarre (ok, never had this happen before when choosing a picture from the MS clip art gallery) behavior. BTW, I move things ALL the time between her computer and mine via e-mail. One more thing... after I inserted one graphic I suddenly noticed that my document started repaginating... I stopped it when it got to 36,000 pages (yes, you read that right). However, when I scrolled to the end of the document it only gave me the actual 25 pages. I copied and pasted into a new document and that stopped that. I have since added new clip art (same behavior as above) to that copied document but the re-pagination has not re-occurred. We are both running McAfee on-line virus scan software. Any ideas? I'm going nuts! - Renee

There seem to be two issues which I suspect are independent.

a) Picture - I quote from the Word Help file
"Change the way graphics are inserted
To insert and past graphics, you can decide the following:

Whether or not pictures are inserted as inline, so that they move with text, or floating, so that text wraps above, in front of, or behind them when you insert or paste them.
Whether or not a drawing canvas, which helps you arrange and move multiple graphics, is inserted around drawing objects, such as AutoShapes and text boxes, when you create them.
Specify the default positioning of pictures

On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Edit tab.
In the Insert/paste pictures as box, click the default positioning you want.
To set the default as inline, select Inline with text; to set the default as floating, select any of the other options.

Specify whether a drawing canvas is inserted around drawing objects

On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the General tab.
Select or clear the Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes check box. "

Pages
The pages climb when too many paragraphs are formatted to keep together & keep with next.

Thanks for the reply! We may have solved the problem because when I click on Tools/Options/Edit tab (On the Tools menu, click Options, Click the Edit tab, In the Insert/paste pictures as box, click the default positioning you want, To set the default as inline, select Inline with text; to set the default as floating, select any of the other options.) I don't even have an option for Insert/Paste Pictures as box. So do you think I just un-install and re-install and it will come back? Thanks -

'Fraid not sorry for the false alarm and generated excitement.
My mistake - I looked at your subject line and saw "XP" and gave you a quote from Office XP help .
I'm not near my computer with Office 2000 on it so cannot look for the right area today.
Having said that, I remember from my earlier days with 97 that picture defaults could be set - I just cannot remember where.
I think it is possibly a button on picture properties and the layout options can certainly be set there.

Hi Renee:
In Word 2000, you can insert clipart from the dialog box either by right clicking the clipart picture & choosing "Insert", left-clicking the clipart picture & then clicking an 'Insert Clip' icon, or dragging the picture directly into your document. The first two methods insert the clipart inline, & dragging inserts it in the top drawing layer (i.e. in front of the text). Does this help?
