Clear locked files (2000 SR1a)

Excel is reporting that some of my files are "locked for editing"... locked by myself. They are not shared files, not in shared folders. I'm operating Excel 2000 on a Win2k platform; I've already cleared the WinNT Temp and User/AppData/Local Settings/Temp folders in an attempt to 'unlock' the files. I've rebooted numerous times, logged off & on, changed usernames, and even a change in system dates has not helped at all. As an 'administrator' I want to tell windows to drop the lock and quit this nonsense, but I don't know how to override the system. Excel is offering no clues, and the only online help I could find at MS deals with network share-related locks.

Is it an NT security issue?
Right click on the file in explorer, Properties - security tab. Do you have access to edit the file or change the security?

If they are on a server, try a reboot of the server.

I don't believe that it is NT Security-related. My login ID has full admin priviledges, and I just verified that I am the official 'owner' of the files in question. It's also not a network-related issue, since the files are all local.

I would still check the properties. I have seen files copied from the network get security added so the "owner" could no longer use them. Being the owner does not grant any special privileges in NT.

Hi David,
Some virus scanners keep an "image", and this can then create problems. Disable your virus scanner to see if the problem persists.
If the files are on a server then possibly the browser has not updated the status. Close all Excel files In W2K go to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Shared Folders, Open Files. If your Excel files are showing open, highlight the file(s), then form the Actions menu choose Close Open Files.
If the problem persists after this action then it is most likely that the problem has been caused by the Virus scanner.

Re: Clear locked files (2000 SR1a)

I run AVG for my antivirus, but it has never caused any identifiable problems in the past. In any regard, I did shut it down and re-opened the file, to receive the same 'Locked' message. The Administrative Tools were of no help since this is, and has always been, a local file. (Though it was nice to take some time and familiarize myself with some of the features .)

In desperation, I rebooted in Safe Mode. I was able to open the file without it being locked (did not read or look for the 'in use' flag?), saved it under another name, and then deleted the original file. Once back in normal mode the new file opened up without a hitch. I'm still curious how this might have happened to begin with, but it does look as if a solution has been found. for all the help.

Hi Paul,
Your suggestion may not have been the exact fix for David but it did help me as I was having the very same issue. The Admin tools path is what worked for me so thanks very much ! That's why I like this forum so much !
