HELP Format Hard Disk

I need to reinstall Windows 98SE that can no longer recognize the CD-ROM or zip drive (at the current moment) and I do not have a floppy boot disk.

I presently cannot get into Windows because I keep getting stopped at the dreaded blue screen, something about VFAT. I checked the MSKB and did all that was recommended, but without success. I can only boot into safe mode occasionally.

HELP! What do I do and how exactly do I do it? Can someone help, please?

    Thanks.

    Re: HELP Format Hard Disk

I've never tried this, but you could boot into Safe Mode, run Windows Explorer and see if it will format a floppy as a boot disk. If it will, you're part-way there. The problem is that you will have to modify that floppy (Config.Sys and Autoexec.Bat) to add DOS drivers for recognizing the CD drive. If you can't do the above you'll need to find someone who DOES have a boot floppy that is "CD-aware." On the other hand, it's been a long time and I don't know if your Win98 CD is bootable or not. If you know how to do it, you could try setting your machine BIOS to boot from the CD drive first.

    Re: HELP Format Hard Disk

Thanks, Big Al. I have it recognizing the CD-ROM now, but how do I go about reformating the hard disk. Do I do a "format" or "fdisk" (or are they the same)?

    Re: HELP Format Hard Disk

That depends on how you got it to recognize the CD. If you have a boot floppy that (should normally) includes the FORMAT command, you would boot from the floppy, then execute FORMAT C: /S to format a hard drive and include the operating system files making it bootable. The only time you should need to start with FDISK first is if you need to change the partitioning of the hard drive. You could run FDISK and select (I think) the number 4 choice to VIEW the existing partitions. This would let you observe whether the whole disk is included, etc. If you take no action and simply exit, then you could do the above format procedure.

After all of that, you'll need to re-boot from the floppy and execute the INSTALL.EXE program on your Windows CD, when the fun begins! Post back if need be.
