Stop Win Media Player from hijacking MP3 streams

How can I stop Windows Media Player from taking over when I try to play MP3 streams? I'm trying to run WinAmp3 on Win2K Server. WinAmp catches the feed immediately after install, but after logging on again, WinMedia Player activates when I go back to the same site. I don't save MP3's so I can't reset file associations through a file properties sheet. I've spelunked around in Active Directory Group Policy to try and tweak Internet Explorer's settings but can't find a way to associate a program with MP3 streams. (Of course, simply trying to delete or rename mplayer2.exe doesn't work. It springs back to life like an undead zombie). Hellp!

    TIA, Mark

Try this. On media player 7.1 go to Tools | Options | Formats then uncheck MP3. On media player 8.0 go to Tools | Options | File Types and uncheck MP3. Haven't looked at WinAmp in a long time but I'd guess that it has a file associations setting also.

For WinAmp's settings go to the upper left corner of the player and right click on the button there. From the menu choose Options / Preferences / Setup and click on MP3 to highlight it. Click Apply & OK and that should do it. After you've followed Joe's instructions to remove the association from Media Player, of course.

Many thanks, guys! That was just the ticket. Strange...I'm running W2KSP3 but that only gives Version6.4 (for which, incidentally, Options are in the View menu). I had set WinAmp for MP3's but WMP grabbed it right back (Memo to Mrs. Gates: Doesn't play nicely with others)
    Thanks Again.

With SP3 you should be able to set you default media player - Start | Set Program Access and defaults. That may stop WIMP fro hijacking the settings in the future.

Re: Stop Win Media Player from hijacking MP3 streams

    Hi Joe

W2KPro shows Start > Set Program Access and Defaults no problem, but it doesn't show up on W2K Server, SP3 or otherwise. I ran a search in Servers' Help, but no joy. (I know I'm not 'sposed to be running this kind of stuff on a server anyway.. I guess it makes sense that the solution would be a little tougher.)
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark,
I just got to try that on a W2k server. Couldn't find it either. Sorry for the bad info. Gues the consent decree only applied to desktop OSes not server versions. You could try and copy appwiz.cpl from a W2K pro machine to the server. I'm not sure if all the underlying registry stuff would be there. Be very careful you could screw up the server. If you have a test system do it there first after you backup the system.

Re: Stop Win Media Player from hijacking MP3 streams

    Hi Joe
I've been away for Thanksgiving... It would be interesting to experiment as you suggest, but your and Doc's earlier solutions put enough of a fix on it that I'm going to let well enough alone.
    Cheers,
    Mark
