'Windows can't locate file...'

I'm sure we've all experienced something like this--I know I have, but it's been a while....

I'm trying to connect an old Win98SE machine to a home network. It's gonna live with two WinXP computers. I put a NIC card into the machine; then I tried to install the driver for the card. Got the floppy that came with the card--loading whatever's on the floppy went OK, as far as I can tell. But then setup asked for the Win98 CD-ROM. I put the Win98 Update disk (this machine shipped with Win95) into the drive. Now setup says Windows can't locate some file. (I shoulda written down the name of the file--sorry.)

What do I do now? (I remember this was something pretty simple, but I haven't messed with Win98 for about a year. WinXP is awfully nice, no?)

Re: 'Windows can't locate file...'

It's been awhile for me too, but as I remember it, Windows frequently says it can't files because it won't or doesn't look in the right place. It seems to me, after checking that the file it wants is REALLY on the disk, I've just "pointed" it to the correct place. However, there have been occasions when, even doing that, Windows STILL says it can't find the file. So, I have once in awhile had to COPY one or more files that it's looking for to a temp folder on the hard drive and then try pointing it to that folder.

I recall a couple times in the past, when the computer is asking for the WIN98 CD, it really wanted the floppy for the NIC... don't ask me why.. but that's what I was getting .

Give that a shot...

Re: 'Windows can't locate file...'

Big Al: Yes, I remember having to point Windows to a file location, but in this case there was no "Browse..." button for that purpose.

BTW, I must digress to confess a sin. After I posted my question, I ran another search and turned up a post that came close to speaking to my problem. (Post # 124935) So I quickly copied my Hardware question and pasted it into a reply to the one and only reply to that question. When I returned to Hardware to delete my first question, I found your timely response. So my apologies to all for the double post.

Anyway, what should I do next? The card is in place, but it appears the driver still is MIA.

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, but...setup didn't ask for the Win98 CD-ROM until after it had done something with the floppy for the NIC.

Re: 'Windows can't locate file...'

Well, you haven't said WHERE the file or files are that it wants - are they on the Windows CD or the NIC floppy? Now that Chris has said it, I do remember having that happen and having to point it right back to the NIC floppy (or whatever). I'm not at all sure why you don't have a browse button or a "standard" window that would let you select some location of your choice.....

I don't recall the details of what was on the screen. Perhaps I can try to repeat this performance when I get home this afternoon, and then provide the gorey details.

Thanks for your help!

Boy, Lucas, I hope you don't think I'm being pigheaded about it. It's just that this happens frequently (unfortunately) with Windows sometimes-stupidity and there's gotta be a way to get the @#$% thing fo "see" the file(s) it's looking for. You and I know they ain't missing, right? Have a good workday.....

No, Al--the only "pigheaded" part of this discussion seems to be Win98. You'd think the dialog would be smart enough to look in the CD-ROM drive. I mean, after all, setup just told you to load the Win98 CD-ROM, right? So you load the disk it asked for and it's too blockheaded to just go there to get what it needs! It's no wonder rank amateurs like me throw up our hands in disgust!

Well...have a nice day yourself, and thanks for your help!

If there isn't a browse button, try typing in D:WIN98 where D is your CD-ROM drive. Also, try typing in the A: for the NIC Floppy, just in case. I know it's sounds stupid, but when has a computer made complete sense, ALL THE TIME???

Re: 'Windows can't locate file...'

I've even pointed it to the windowssystem folder and had it find the file needed there.
Go figure.
