pagination w/ a master document (Word2002/WindowsNT)

I have a master doc w/ a couple of sub docs. I want to set the pagination at the bottom of the page. I keep gettting mistakes. Should I play with sections here? I am playing but haven't a clue....

I usually find that careful use of paragraph formats "Keep with next", "Keep lines together" and "Page break before" can sort this kind of problem.

Can you give us a better description of exactly what is wrong with the pagination?

FWIW...Just a word (pardon the pun) of caution about Master Documents...if you search this Word list for "master documents" you will probably find considerable discussion as to why you might not want to use them. It could be that the source of your problems lies in the use of the Master Documents. There seems to be a feeling that when using Master Documents, it is only a matter of time before they become corrupt. Please do the search and see what others have to say. HTH

I thought Master Documents where the answer to my prayers. Now what do I do? Do I create just one big manual??

You can use master documents if you follow a number of simple precautions.

Start by deciding on all of your level 1 headings

Create the master document and add all the level 1 headings to it

Split the document at the level 1 headings to create your sub documents

Always keep the master document and all sub documents in a single folder

Take a backup copy of everything at this stage and never delete these versions

Edit the individual sub documents, don't open them from the master document until you are nearly finished

Once you have finished editing the individual sub documents take another backup and never delete these versions

After this stage you should never open the individual sub documents again, only edit inside the master document

Open the master document, open all sub documents, create TOC, cross references etc.

backup, backup, backup[/list]You will occassionally find that it has all become corrupt, but just replace the corrupted document using the latest backup, it is usually the master document itself that gets corrupted, and that should only have the TOC and the pointers to the individual sub documents in it.

I have been using master documents like this for some years and have yet to lose more than an hour or two's work.

Thanks for the tips, Stuart! I have to mull this over and decide which way to go....
