Icon storage for IE toolbar? (any/all)

I have gone through ALL of the .dll's in the System folder (Win9x) and the System32 folder (WinXP) and I cannot find the icons that are used to create the IE toolbar. That is the "Stop" button, the little house (for Home), the Refresh arrows, etc. I looked in iexplore.exe and several other places -- but I was unsuccessful.

All of the expected sources do not have those EXACT icons in them. I must believe that they are NOT stored as simple ".ico" files inside .dll or .exe or even 'ocx files.

Does anyone have any other information? Thanks.

I don't have the answer, but I noticed a lot of overlap with Windows Explorer (in Windows 2000). If I place a smaller Windows Explorer window in front of my browser and customize the toolbar with larger or smaller icons, both windows adjust. Spooky.

    R2--
Don't want to post something no help--and if this is let me know and I'll delete it. If you are trying to customize the icons on the IE toolbar, there is info at Browser Extensions: Adding Toolbar Buttons MSDN Library (Sync Toc Task Pane on Left) which involves html and writing scripts and Adding Toolbar Buttons Tutorial

Also, there is info from the Internet Explorer 6 Resource Kit p. 206 and if it isn't within easy reach, I can PM you or fax the page: "If you want to include a custom toolbar icon, prepare the following items: For each custom toolbar icon, two ico files. The first .ico file contains the active images in the appropriate size and color depths. The second .ico file contains the default images (grayscale) in the appropriate size and color depths. It is recommended that you use a graphics program to draw your icons and a development environment, such as Microsoft Visual C++ Development Studio to create the .ico files..." I can PM or send you the page if this is what you're after.

Since I'm not quite sure if you are trying to create and customize toolbar icons, if this is off point, let me know and I'll delete so as to not waste space.

Re: Icon storage for IE toolbar? (any/all)

Thanks for the links. It looks like Lee did the same thorough search I did:

"Still unable to find any Internet Explorer toolbar icons to download.
Planning now to just edit one of the default IE toolbar icons, but I can't
find them in any file. I used an icon viewer and looked at all IE files,
the dll cache, WINNT, system32 folder, etc., and no IE toolbar icons.

Does anyone know in what file the standard icons for the IE toolbar are
    stored?"

    Sounds hauntingly familiar!

The second link has some very intriguing programs on it, but for my 'hacking' they have to be freeware. One that looks very promising for me is "ResThief". I even like the name! Also, "Resource Hacker" sounds like it has a lot of potential as well.

Jefferson, you have a point. Maybe I should look harder at the Explorer .dll's and resources... Maybe one day I can find the ######s! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Defrag - as for the second post -- I don't mean to be ungrateful, but those are less helpful, so you can remove them if you like. I have created several icons already for IE -- using some of that information. The problem I have is that the Microsoft/MSDN documentation is NOT up to date. <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

WinXP uses a different icon design than prior OS's, and I am trying to find the source of the IE toolbar icons on a WinXP machine. If I could only find the source, I would know EXACTLY how the IE toolbar icons differ from prior versions. The MSDN article on icon creation was written before WinXP and they have not updated it to include what occurs in that OS....

Re: Icon storage for IE toolbar? (any/all)

I get the sense--this is an area where I have to stretch to understand what I'm looking for--but I learn from the search--from reading the IE Resource Kit even if it is out of date--and MSDN on the web shouldn't be--that there are no discrete toolbar icon folders. Let me know what you find out. I would sure email MSDN and the authors of the Resource Kit. Just had a thought--would the people at Sys Internals be able to nail this for you--Sys Internals? Maybe Russonovich or Cogswell--you can also put it up on the MSN developer newsgroups. I understand you may have been there and done this a while back or email the people who maintain the IE MVP websites.

Re: Icon storage for IE toolbar? (any/all)

In my experience, e-mailing and contacting MS has caused nothing but frustration on my part. So I don't bother any more. I wish I could say different, but I cannot.

I believe that there COULD be no clear single entity that holds the IE toolbar icons. While that is possible, it is illogical from *their* perspective. It is FAR easier to hold ALL the icons in ONE resource -- and then populate the toolbar from that single resource. It makes coding the interface that much easier.

I will accept the fact that MAY BE the creators of IE did not stick all the icons into a SINGLE resource. Fine. But, now where are the MULTIPLE resources that hold the individual IE icons???

I cannot find them as a group or singly. They must be somewhere, but where???

I will keep looking. I understand your frustration with Microsoft contacts--unless you are working with a specific individual who wants to help, it can be ridiculous. The people with Sysinternals though, are not Microsoft.

I suspose... I am not familar with SysInternals -- other that the fact that I love their programs!! What I mean is that I have never communicated with them and certainly have never established any dialogue. I was hoping there was some simple answer I was overlooking... <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>
