    Protection (XL97, WinNT4)

Hi there. Can anyone tell me how to protect a worksheet so that only certain cells are available to change - but so that I can still click into those cells? I have a spreadsheet that is effectively a calendar, but in order to make the dates set up correctly I have some quite complicated formulae in the cells that have the dates showing, and I don't want to risk the users being able to accidentally (or otherwise) change these. However, when I unlock the user-usable cells and protect the worksheet, it becomes impossible to click around the sheet in the user-usable cells.

Has anyone got any good ideas?

    Many thanks in advance

Sounds strange. By default, users can click in any cell in a protected worksheet.

A worksheet has a property EnableSelection with 3 possible values:

xlNoRestrictions - user can click in any cell (this is the default)
xlUnlockedCells - user can click in unlocked cells only
xlNoSelection - user can't click in any cell

This property (that is effective only if the worksheet has been protected) can only be set in VBA or in the Visual Basic Editor, and it is not "sticky" - after you close and re-open the workbook, the setting reverts to its default value xlNoRestrictions, unless an automatic macro applies one of the other settings.

You might look in the Visual Basic Editor. Make sure the Project Explorer and Properties Window are visible. Select the offending worksheet in the Project Explorer, then check the setting of EnableSelection.

It does sound strange, doesn't it? But that's what I'm getting. They can only *edit * unlocked cells, but can only get to a cell by using the cursor keys, not by clicking. And they can move (using the cursor keys) to any cell, without restriction - it only complains if they try to edit a locked cell.
