Explorer - spaces and periods in file name

(This is not a critical issue, it's an observation)

    oct22f.rep3.wpd

I'm in Windows Explorer, Win98SE, renaming a few files. I've been having problems with periods and spaces, so I've been selecting a file name, tapping the <F2> function key, and then adding or removing periods and/or spaces.

When a space is involved, I get the pop-up alert "Are you sure you want to change the read-only ...." etc etc.

When a space is not involved, I don't get the pop-up.

My most typical change is to delete the period between "oct22f" and "rep3" in the above example, and at a later time, to introduce a space between the two parts of the filename. Later still I might reverse the process.

This struck me as odd behaviour on the part of Explorer.

    Hi Chris:
I only get that message when I delete or change the last period or one or more letters of the extension on a registered file type.

    You're right (as usual!).

I went back this morning and checked - I'd been receiving the message that says "Are you sure you want to ... read-only file name". Nothing to do with file type.

Portrait of a guy in too much of a hurry: reads as far as "Are you sure", ignores the rest, taps the enter key, ...... then wastes fifty times as much time of his own and other people's time struggling to understand what happened.

    With apologies, and thanks.
