Sound Card Drivers (XP Home SP1)

I sure hope one of you guys can tell my why once in a great while my machine loses it's sound card drivers for no reason!! It does it very sporadic and everything else loads just fine during startup. When I look in Device Mgr.there's a yellow exclamation point on Avance AC '97 Audio for VIA audio controller. Thankfully XP has system restore and I just click on one of the previous dates when it still had the drivers. It's very frustrating because everything else works just fine.

If anybody can shed some light on what's causing this I'd greatly appreciate it!! Thanks VERY much, JeffT.

    Defrag,
Yes, I have flashed my BIOS for XP and I had this problem BEFORE I installed SP1 which I was hoping would fix the problem, but it didn't. Thanks very much for your reply and suggestions! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Re: Sound Card Drivers (XP Home SP1)

There is no error message, I just have NO sound. Then when I go to device mgr. there is a Yellow circle with an exclamation point in the middle indicating a problem with the device.. I wish I could give you more help and input, but this has been going on for about 3 months now and has happened probably 6 times. Thankfully I have system restore which reinstalls the driver. Very strange, I've never had anything like this before.

    Jeff-
Found this KB 328435: Multimedia Programs May Not Work After You Install Windows XP SP1--but doesn't mention your Via AC '97 Audio. Have you flashed your BIOS to the latest update for XP?

Just a thought, instead of reverting back using system restore, you might try removing and re-installing the driver throught Properties. Maybe you have a corrupted file, etc, which, when you restore the driver, is just re-starting the problem back to square one. Could be many other things, but this MIGHT help

    Kip,
The thing is it works fine for 2-3 weeks then, Boom! no more sound. It's a real weird problem and I really appreciate all of you guys trying to help me out.
I'll be out of town from today until maybe next Friday, I have to be operated on. :-( I'll talk to you guys when I get back! :-) (I can't wait to get home)

    Regards,
    JeffT

What I mean, when you see yellow exclamation sign in Device Manager, highlight it and choose Properties from Acton menu (or right-clicking it). Under General tab, in Device Status window you will see the error message along with "If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter" proposition and Troubleshoot button. Did you get any meaningful advice from Troubleshooter?

    Kip,
When I've tried to run "TroubleShooter" it shows No error message!?!?! This is what's so frustrating about this problem and the fact it's so inconsistent. The next time it happens I will try and run "Trouble Shooter" again and see if gives me an error message of some sort.. Thanks for the reply......
