Cannot switch identities on new PC (OE6 SP1)

I've just moved to a new XP Pro computer, and used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy stuff via a null modem cable from the "old" Windows 98 SE computer (20 hours!). Most things now work, with the exception of Outlook Express, where I can only get the main identity to work reliably.

To explain further;
* Originally there were three identities on Outlook Express on the old W98SE computer.
* There was only a single userid on the old computer.
* I now have two users, called (say) Tarquin and Gladys, on the new WXPPro computer.
* I have copied the Outlook Express settings twice using the F&S Transfer Wizard, when logged on to each of the WXPPro userids.
* I have tried switching between the three identities when logged on to each userid, but I am immediately switched back to the main identity. There 'seems' to be a message behind the Outlook Express window, but it disappears almost instantly and I don't have a hope of reading it.
* On occasion (rare) when playing with this, I've had it switch to the second and third identity, where there is mail relating to each identity. This has happened occasionally after logging off and on, or stopping and starting Outlook Express. But I cannot get it to do this now.
*Looking with Windows Explorer in Documents and SettingsGladysLocal SettingsApplication DataIdentities I find I have three {nnnnnnnn-nnnn-nnnn etc} folders with MicrosoftOutlook Expressten or so DBX and LOG files
* I have the same folder structure under the second userid Tarquin

I now find I don't understand Outlook Express like I thought I did!
Should these folder structures be identical, under (say) "All Users?) so that each of the three identities could be accessed from either of the two userids?
Or is it not supposed to work this way - if so, how should it work?

Anyone who can explain what I'm doing wrong and how I can get it to work properly can have a Gold Star!

Or should I now be using Outlook 2002?

Now that you are using Windows XP, I see no need in using identities. The user accounts are totally different than the Win 9x identities. The "identities" can not be accessed fro the different accounts. The best thing to do is to set up each email account under the right user account, and then just use the "Switch User" to access the different email accounts. Each user will have it own email files and address book.

I have also found that the "Transfer Wizard" is not fool proof and no longer use it.

It is NOT the file structure of OE that is different, but are different under Windows XP. Each account will have it own files, including temp and temp internet files (tif). Each user can not access the other unless the user accounts are Admin type or the sharing has been turned on for these folders. Forget what you knew about "identities" and start using the "User accounts"

Alluser account folders are used to share the "Start menu" and desktop icons. I have found that all of the other folder are not really set to be shared.

Windows XP allows one to switch to another account with out logging out.
The following is from Windows XP Pro "Help and support"

To change users without logging off in a workgroup environment
Click Start, click Log off, and then click Switch User.
On the Welcome screen, click another user account icon.
Windows displays the new user's desktop and settings.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cannot switch identities on new PC (OE6 SP1)

Dave

I find this morning that the problem I describe above is (allegedly) fixed by "Q329084 You cannot switch identities in Outlook Express after you install Windows XP SP1", and that prior to this there were two workrounds available:
a) to start Help, leave it open, and just ignore it, and you could then switch identities
to uncheck the box which says "Use this Identity when starting a Program" (not that I understand what this option means!)

I found this latter bypass on Tom Koch's Inside Outlook Express website, which seems to me to be Very Good.

Your advice is very good and matches both common sense and the "user account-based" nature of XP. The only difficulty I would have with it is that, based on my Windows 98 experience, switching identities within a single userid is considerably faster than logging off from one userid and logging on to another in XP (is that what you mean by "Switch User"?). I've also had dialup line-drop problems when logging off one userid and logging onto the other.

But these are early days, and who knows how I will feel with a bit of experience?

I think I was rather optimistic about the "success" of the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It coped with my IE Favourites, but seems to have missed a whole raft of folders and files. I now have a 32 MB Pen Drive (USB memory disk), which (if it works on W98) will enable me to transfer stuff across rather faster...

Thanks again for your advice - much appreciated.

Re: Cannot switch identities on new PC (OE6 SP1)

Even easier to press the Windows key+L to get to the "Switch Users" screen, I find! Fortunately the problems with the dial-up line dropping when switching users have "gone away" with the acquisition of broadband. I've still had to keep the multiple identities, at least temporarily, as the easiest way to migrate between old-mail-ISP and new-mail-ISP.

What's this "Main Identity" that I cannot ever switch to? ("The current identity could not be changed because one of the applications was unable to switch. Close any open dialog boxes in other applications before trying again." even when OE is the only program open.)

And now I occasionally get the situation where switching identities causes the OE window to disappear completely, with nothing minimised on the Task Bar, and it will not start again. MSIMN.EXE is still runnning, as indicated on the Task Manager "Processes" window. If you click on it, then on End Process, you can start another instance of OE, and all appears well again.
