What is running on my System (Win 2000Pro and XP Pro)

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

When in Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro, I can look at the Task Manager and see what processes are running on my laptop or desktop PCs.

    1) Is there a way to copy this list and keep it in say a text file or a MS-Excel spreadsheet?

    2) How does one know what really is running on their PC? I mean in the list I can see stuff like

smss.exe, and csrss.exe and lsass.exe and svchost.exe. I have no idea what these are, and I would like to find out. Is there a source of information about these processes?

    Thanks

To answer #1, it can't be done with Task Manager. You'll need to get a hold of the resource kit for Win2000 or a third party application to dump the running processes into a file somewhere.

This looks like a site worth bookmarking.

I am still researching the copy and paste thingy, but to have an image instead of text that you can sort and manipulate and tweak like you want is not going to do the job. Sure you can take a couple of screen shots and then retype the text in MS-Excel and then do what you want, that might work.

    Thanks again.

Re: What is running on my System (Win 2000Pro and XP Pro)

    Wassim--

A good site for info on TM Processes with colorful chart is Black Viper's Windows XP Home and Professional Service Configurations. He reportedly has added a new utility that will scan your system for a number of unnecessary processes. He recommends ending tasks using "services.msc" in the run box. Do not end winlogin as he says, or you could have a significant boot challenge.

Also you can google or search engine any of these quickly and get definitions and context for all of them. If you want threads on tweaking them, then just click google groups three columns to the right.

I just printed the processes out by using alt+print screen and pasting the screen shots of processes in two stages into Photo Editor (you can resize or select and get all the processes in one view---there seems to be unfortunately no mechanism or option within Task Manager to print directly (there should be and a way to put these processes directly into Word and Excel).

There must be several ways to copy this image into Excel from Photo Editor, or even Paint and many in the lounge and perhaps you Dave or Mark can show me the best way. I have never used Excel--so obviously I don't know the best way but I know there are many. I sized this image from Photo Editor (admittedly I can't get all the processes in one scroll so it will take two shots) and copy/pasted it into Excel. Perhaps I should have used Word as an intermediary--and I could have used the "save dialogue box" and possibly dragged the image into Excel or dragged or pasted into Word then Excel--if I even needed to do that.

I know there is an "Import Data" function and surely a number of ways to go from Word into Excel if you can't copy or drag directly into Excel. I have the processes copied into Excel now, having never coordinated Word and Excel--obviously I don't know the best way. I know a text entry in a cell can contain from 1 to 32, 767 charcters--so surely there are many ways to get this chart from Photo Editor or a screen grabber into Excel--and I doubt Word has to be the intermediary.

I hope your familiarity with Excel or someone's will extract the best way and then post it for me.I think you can get it into an Excel Spread Sheet--I just printed out mine using Photo Editor into any size I want.

Wassim - Check out Process Explorer and PStools at http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/utilities.shtml. May allow you to capture the processes.

Re: What is running on my System (Win 2000Pro and XP Pro)

    Wassim--

I unfortunately am just learning lots of Word and literally beginning Excel. I can get out Word documents, but many times Word runs me instead of my running Word--particularly margins. I am going after that. I know Office components are awfully interactive with each other and web pages, so you can obviously Paste into even Paint--rudimentary but handy or more functional Photo Editor or any of the nice screen grabbers Hard Copy, Irfranview that people in the Lounge have linked me to. I posted the problem in Excel, but any of the mods are familiar enough to help us with the best way to go from Photo Editor into Excel. I don't know if you have to make a Word stop first, but I really doubt it--it it's on the clipboard I would think there's a way to get it into any of Office's components easily.

    Dave A.--

The great link you put up here with stopped working--including a shortened version of it.
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm
as well as many sub-links on this gentleman's page sometime the late PM of 12/2--could they be having server problems? It worked all 12/2 until the late evening on fine.

Re: What is running on my System (Win 2000Pro and XP Pro)

    Wassim--

Sorry to be so late in learning such a varied application. Appreciate offer very much.
Have good books, some links--starting to dig into Word/Excel. I know the help in the Excel lounge and all the components of Office is excellent , but most of the threads seem to require experience, context, and vocabulary before you can profit from them--and the same goes for many of the Office components threads.

I am trying to understand what you originally wanted to do with these processes--I would think you can paste most anything into Word--but what did you want to do with these Processes that you wanted them in Word or Excel. I'm missing this.

Printing them although not directly from Task Manager, but pasting and printing them into any Image application, or Word is easy enough. Can't figure out what you are trying to do.

Dave A's link is an excellent resource, as well as other links on that site, but it stopped working last night--possibly server problems.

    Thanks much,

Like I said, it is a VERY slow site. Even with my cable connection, it takes about 3 minutes to fully load the complete list.

    Thanks Dave.

But [b][i]speed of loading the page is not the issue--it simply won't connect and I get a page not available. I'm going to try to ping the site from the dos prompt/command prompt/command line.

    Thanks,
