Word being trashed (OFFICE 97 SR1/Win XP)

A friend booted up the other day to find his desktop Word icon changed to Binder and winword.exe nowhere to be found. He uninstalled Office, re-installed, started Word only for it to crash immediately and for winword.exe again to disappear. He updated his virus protection, re-installed Word and all is well again. Anyone had this experience or know of the culprit?

Try selecting any shortcut icon on the desktop (even one that has changed into something else), right click>Properties>Change Icon. I have only had this experience on other people's computers, therefore have no idea what they did to have the icon change. But by selecting the Change icon option I have always managed to get back to the original or even something I like better. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>
