Step 1: delete the period from the end of the URL on the address line and press Enter.
Step 2: view page successfully.

Regarding ping, you only ping the host name in a URL: protocol://hostname/folder/page.htm

<pre>C:>ping www.pacs-portal.co.uk

Pinging www.pacs-portal.co.uk [195.226.52.34] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 195.226.52.34: bytes=32 time=201ms TTL=111
Reply from 195.226.52.34: bytes=32 time=190ms TTL=111
Reply from 195.226.52.34: bytes=32 time=190ms TTL=111
Reply from 195.226.52.34: bytes=32 time=190ms TTL=111

Ping statistics for 195.226.52.34:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 190ms, Maximum = 201ms, Average = 192ms

C:>ping http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm
Unknown host www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm.</pre>

(The above from the Windows 2000 command window.)

Were you able to ping the host?

<UL><LI>If so, great, you should be able to browse it, too.

<LI>If not, can you ping the IP address that I got when I pinged it?

<UL><LI>If so, then there appears to be a name resolution problem. This could be an ISP issue or your computer.

<LI>If not, I'm fairly certain it's not your computer and there probably isn't any solution other than to complain to your ISP.

Night, night.

Re: Pinging pacs-portal

Using the IP address in the address line of IE will not always work. I have four domains that all trace back to the same IP address when pinged and there is no way they can be browsed for via the address - the hosting ISP does not know which domain you are looking for.

Are you saying you are still unable to enter
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk
into the address field of your IE and reach the site?

WRT pinging, try increasing the timeout, e.g.:
ping www.pacs-portal.co.uk -w 2000

*****
Is there a reason you are continuing to use a subject totally irrelevant to what appears to be the problem?
Is there a reason you posted in small italics above? - I'm afraid I simply find it too illegible to bother reading.

Re: What is running on my System (Win 2000Pro and

I find it difficult if not impossible to believe that any mortal could tell the difference between using an IP address and the 'www.xxx.com' friendly name. If you're experiencing packet loss and slow response times from a single website, it's either server on the other end, congestion on the Internet, or the ISP - all the advice in the world from the Lounge isn't going to help that situation. Bag it and try it later, or find an alternate resource.

Pinging/Reaching Pacs-Portal

I don't understand the screen shot on two links Dave but would like to. Please note the following:
1) Has nothing to do with load speed--last night page loaded in a flash. My cable line seems to load as fast as any T1 or T3 line I'm using elsewhere.
2) There is a ping problem to that site somewhere between the UK and this machine.
3) All other sites ping normally--well under the 200 millisec. parameter my ISP has given me. They ping at 24-25 milliseconds which is well under the nl ceiling.
4) I have put in the commands at the dos prompt ipconfig/all; ipconfig/release; ipconfig/renew.
They all perform normally.
5) Highest level Tech Support at ATT BB agrees with me; and says if someone were trying to reach the site on his T1 line in Cincinnaiti; Redmond; and the UK and their trace route has no problem I could still have one from that server to my desktop.
6) I can reach any other IP address I try--and pinging that link consistently shows the problem and the screen shot is below.
So the fact that Mark, Dave, and Leif hit the site doesn't exclude a problem with that site alone for me.

Would appreciate any input. Does anyone have a pet trace route program that might map a problem from that url's server to my desktop? I cannot find a url I cannot hit unless there is one that is being slash dotted or with server problems I am not finding other than Dave's excellent link.

Thanks,

Pinging/Reaching Pacs-Portal

[i]<small>Edited by WyllyWylly
Mark moved it because this thread which dealt basically with information on interpreting Task Manager processes and Startup information had a terrific link from Dave A.

The link is http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm It's an excellent resource. I could reach it last night--I can't now. Mark's reasoning is sound but I had to start and say the link doesn't work in the context of where the link was offered.

I was pointing out that having said that, that still wouldn't explain why I can't reach that particularly url, when I can ping any other site on the web perfectly but not that one, and I can load any page on the web quickly. There could, in fact be a problem with the person on a machine next door, if they were on a different node.

While I'm hardly a TCP/IP network guy, there can be reasons besides me and my machine why someone from Redmond, UK, and Cincy can reach a site through their ISP backbone and I can't. It is a valuable link, and I'm just sorry I can't reach it. It's great information. My screen shot above proves that it won't ping. Go to the thread and you'll see three people from California, Ohio, and England saying they can reach it.

Pinging/Reaching Pacs-Portal

Jefferson--

Appreciate the help, but I did try the link without the period after "htm"--good point, but still can't reach it which is a bit interesting because I want to find some reason and can't. I get the "page not found error." Fortunately for me anyway, I liked the site enough to save as *.htm which is my favorite way to save. When I tried to get the lounge to help on why .htm seems to be successful with more web pages, you came up with something a few months ago--still not clear on it--it works though. One of the first things I did to help hit the site was to progressively shorten the url. I'll take your ping instructions and try again.

Pinging/Reaching Pacs-Portal

School up how-? I pasted the link and cut the period. I hit it all the time for hours--I was hitting it before from the link period or no, and if that's not enough Al--I shortcutted it to the desktop and was able to hit it until a midnight that day from either Dave's link, period and all or my shortcuts from the link. So I'm willing to "school up"--reading up is never a problem but I can't do anything to hit the link. I can hit a few thousand others okay so why not that one?

Those same shortcuts that worked, don't now, and the same link from the original thread over in XP that did work doesn't now.

Pinging/Reaching Pacs-Portal(Win 2000Pro and

Jefferson--

I tried to ping the address you did. The original ping attempt was at the instruction of ATT tech support--they contract to Convergys. It can't ping the address. It can ping just about anywhere else on the web. Complaining to an ISP that was permitted to merg by the Current FCC is like expecting pigs to fly. If you monitor DSL Reports, help from them is rated as somewhere between much less than stellar and eggregiously bad.

Thanks for the help. I will get my pinging straight in the future. I will also run a 3D trace route for what it's worth.

Pinging/Reaching Pacs-Portal (Win 2000Pro and

Jefferson--
The result posted above is what happens during most pings. I was able to ping it 1/4 times once with 3 packests lost--one got there. I did a "tracert" command and was able to hit their IP 1/6 times: 10ms 9ms 16 ms12.124.58.41; using the IP address in the address bar fails every time, but of course fails a bit quicker than the url. I spoke with ATT and they suggest their could be a DNS server problem at their end even though most people in the lounge have been able to reach it. They suggest I get an administrator address if Dave A. has one--and try to find out what might be the problem at their end. They also say that the fact that other people can reach it does not mean that their is a problem on my machine or with my particular connection--and this is the only url out of hundreds tried in the last two days that I can't reach immediately. I can hit Yahoo in 24ms every time I ping it which is a respectable ping time.
Same with other sites.

Thanks,

Stop wasting our time with these long winded explainations that you do know understand what we are saying. I will not read another reply from that is more that 10 lines long.

And quit "hi jacking" threads with your lack of understanding.
