Explorer folders opening in new window (XP Pro SP1)

I have a problem with windows explorer always opening folders in a new window when I click on them. The option is definitely set to open in the same window in the "Folder Options". I've tried toggling the option back and forth, that did not help..

If I open a folder from the LH-pane of explorer is opens it correctly in the RH-pane, but if I click a folder in the RH-pane (or single pane view) it always spawns another window..

    Any help appreciated!

Ah, the old settings retention bugaboo again! I never know about this one, except that <!post=this modification ,142559>this modification <!/post> has worked for several of us on slightly different variations of the problem. If you're nervous about using Regedit, steer clear of it, OR export a backup copy of that section of the registry before you try the patch.

    Al,

I can see why that might work, but it hasn't solved it for me unfortunately <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

I've done some more investigating and I think what may have happened is that I've fuddled the file association for the "File Folders" type. What I have 'open' set to currently is <explorer.exe "%1"> (without the <> of course!), but I don't know what it should be set to. I don't have another machine here to compare it to!!

If anyone with XP can tell me what the open command for "File Folder" is set to I'd appreciate it. If you can't view it from the Folder Options then you can find it in the registry at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesDirectoryshellOp encommand"

    Thanks,
    Mark

Er, I can't do anything with the Folder Options in Windows Explorer for File Folder. Also, I don't have the key you mentioned in my registry. Maybe it's because I never changed the association. Do you think if you export the key(s) for safety and then deleted the "Open" entry, it would be a way to check it out?

well I never! Removing the 'open' entryfrom the registry has fixed it <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
It seems to have defaulted to 'explore' instead, and that works fine!!

    Thanks Al, you're a star!
