    Compatibility Options - Descriptions (Word 2000 SR3)

Is there a list describing what each of the compatibility options under Tools, Options, Compatibility does? I'd like to figure out if I want to turn on more of the options by default. Thx. -Rich.

Re: Compatibility Options - Descriptions (Word 2000 SR3)

The compatibility options (Tools > Options > Compatibility) are explained in KB articles, with about a sentence worth for each setting:

    <table border=1><td> version </td><td>article </td><td>7.0</td><td>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;192634</td><td>97</td><td>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;166016</td><td>98 (Mac)</td><td>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;192635</td><td>2000</td><td>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;193266</td><td>2002</td><td>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;288792</td></table>

BTW, I work with Word2000 too, and usually leave all the settings on their default (off) except for "Don't expand character spaces on the line ending SHIFT-RETURN" (because forced full justification isn't commonly used in Germany).

Settings I sometimes change if I want to get a special effect are "Do full justification like WordPerfect 6.x for Windows" to achieve a "denser" fully justified text, "Don't balance columns for Continuous section starts" to get newspaper-like columns that don't balance automatically, "Suppress space before after a hard page or column break" (though I usually do manual page breaks as paragraph formatting, if at all), and, for a nice effect, "Swap left and right borders on odd facing pages".

I'd be generally wary of the options with "Do ... like Word XX", because they may re-introduce bugs that have been fixed in the newer version.
I have for example experienced strange letter spacing with "Arial Unicode MS" (and IPA phonetic characters) that was caused by the option "Use Word97 line breaking rules for Asian text".
Or the footnote bug (footnotes appearing on the wrong page) which has been fixed in Word2000 will reappear if you check
