Win Explorer hangs

I need some help/advice on how to locate source of hangs in Win Explorer in ME.

I recently used Win Update but had a problem with downloading a couple security files. At about same time, I installed new antivirus files and a backup software program. Not sure if any of this is connected, but shortly after this I began to have strange freezes in IE and Win Explorer. In W Explorer if I select a file to delete it, most of the time it hangs my computer and I have to force shutdown with Alt Ctrl Del or the power button. Also having some strange freezes in IE when I try to use scrollbar.

I run a Toshiba Satellite 2805 S402, Win ME, PIII 850, 384MB RAM, 20GB HD.

Any ideas? I'd like to get the win update working again too if I can? Suggestions on that? Seems MS is a bit stingy on info on the new win update system...

"I installed new antivirus files and a backup software program" which ones did you install?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Win Explorer hangs

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I kept message short and left out the details:

I am using McAfee ver 5.21.1000 and updated DAT to 4.0.4235 and today tried 4236 with Engine 4.1.60
The backup software is Smartback ver 2.0 (www.jam-software.com)

I sort of think it is from the Windows update I did recently. It is choking on two security updates and won't install them. Runs about 25-35% then stops with error message "cannot install"

I have scandisked and defragged run Virus scan and nothing seems to show there.

Uh oh! Dave is probably sitting there laughing and waiting for me to jump in! I don't know if your backup software is real-time or not, but let's get this out of the way first. As the resident Lounge whipping-boy for McAfee, I have to tell you this. You didn't say what OS you're running, but try a Run command and execute MSCONFIG. Look in the Startup tab for an entry called ALOGSERV and make sure it is unchecked. It's a logging program McAfee supplies that causes all kinds of slowdown and hangs. McAfee support agreed a long time ago that the program isn't required. If the problem doesn't go away, come back and let's talk about your backup program.....

Sorry! I re-read the post and you DID say what OS. Apologies!!!

Thanks for the idea. I had shut ALOG down long ago as it was problematic. Good input though, I checked to make sure the update hadn't turned it back on and it is still OFF.

So where do we go from here?

Well, let's talk about SmartBack. I looked at the link you gave and can't tell for sure. If you go into MSCONFIG again, does SmartBack have anything running in the background in order to do its routine backup or synch'ing operations? I guess you could also look in Add/Remove Programs to see what MS fixes you DO have installed; maybe even un-install one or two to see if IT helps.

Re: Win Explorer hangs

Don't see anything running from SmartBack. I did send them an email requesting help, and hopefully they might have an idea or two. Too bad there site has no troubleshooting info.

I looked in Add/Remove Programs and don't see anything about the MS patches. The new Windows update might help me remove some patches though. I notice it put a new folder called WU TEMP on my HD but it is currently empty. I wonder if I have a Registry glitch that is causing the Update to not work properly? Hmmmm.

About my bedtime here in SE Asia, so won't be around much longer but will check in AM if I haven't heard anymore from any of you.

Thanks,

Re: Win Explorer hangs

I guess you could try un-checking all apps in MSCONFIG (or as many as possible) to see if the problem goes away. If it does, you'd have to re-check them one at a time to try to find the culprit. Given this and other threads and a number of other places reporting problems with the MS updates sites, one has to wonder.....

Re: Win Explorer hangs

I'll give it another look and think through in the morning. This has been a fun day with my wife's desktop monitor dying, my new Mandrake Linux box being upgraded to new version of the OS and the usual fun bugs popping up...

Will check back tomorrow to see if you all have any other insights. Btw, the MS Win Update site just gave me a Service Not Available so maybe they are working on some glitches there too? ;-)

At this time I will only sit here at watch and see where this goes.
Thanks, for the plug

Re: Win Explorer hangs

Back online again! I tried a few things and ended up uninstalling Smartbackup 2 and things seem to have returned to normal. I haven't tried reinstalling yet as I am so happy not to keep having to force shutdown! :-)

I notified the authors and hope to get some feedback. Thanks for input that was helpful in tracking this down. Normally I do not add and update more than one thing at a time to make it easier to track down problems. But I had fallen behind on windows updates, etc. from travelling and being out of internet range so did several things at once. I don't think I will try that mistake again.

Thanks again for the help. Looks like Win Update wasn't the problem this time anyhow. Now if they would just get it working again...

Re: Win Explorer hangs

Well, I'm glad you zeroed in on the problem. If there isn't a workaround with SmartBack, there are others. Since you use a laptop, I don't know what your backup "destination" is (a network share?) or whether you do selected file backups or whole system backups. But just for starters, Karen Kenworthy's File Replicator is . Then there's my favorite (among others) Drive Image which ISN'T Free, but worth every penny!

Re: Win Explorer hangs

I just got an email from the Smart Backup2 software's author with another file to try, but it did the same thing. I wonder if it might be a conflict with my "pointer" (eraser) type mouse although it uses pretty standard software?

Glad to have a company respond so quickly on a shareware product. Puts some of the BIG guys to shame. I might check Karen Kenworthy's option too. I have been a big fan of hers for a long time and use several other of her toys!

Thanks for your input!
