Defrag stopping Win 98SE

Hi folks, every time I run a defrag on my machine Win 98SE, it endlessly stops and starts, for it to finish it restarts around 18 to 20 times. The message reading in "SHOW DETAILS" is "Drive's Controls Changing, restarting", this continues to go on up to a certain point, then repeats over and over, each time it restarts the defrag gets painfully further 56%, 58%, 60% etc. I always make sure all programs are shut down, is there something I am missing?

It depends on whether you're even able to shut down everything yourself. Sometimes it's a discreet process that you aren't aware of that's causing "hits" on the hard drive and making the process restart itself until it times out. I think your best bet is to boot the thing into SAFE MODE and then run the defrag. That usually does the trick. (In case it's been awhile, you get to safe mode at boot time, by hitting F8 just as the machine "beeps" at the end of the POST operation) Good luck and let us know how you make out.....

You may want to delete ALL files that are in the "C:WINDOWSAPPLOG" folder. Then restart the machine and then run defrag.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thank you Al and Dave, I will try both. I did not think to run a defrag in Safe Mode, and I have never cleaned out the C:WINDOWSAPPLOG folder. Appreciate the swift response, you guys are great.
