Can't see incoming HTML Attachment (OE6)

I had an email with about a 38KB HTML attachment mailed to me, and there was no sign of any attachment when I opened the message. The same message with HTML attachment was also emailed to my work address, and I had no trouble opening the attachment with Lotus Notes. I then zipped the HTML attachment and mailed it to my home account and OE handled it OK.

I do not have the security setting to block potentially dangerous attachments set, so it is something else.

I went a little further and looked at the message source using File Properties. I could see a lot of HTML in the source, but it was changed from the HTML that was originally in the attachment (as viewed in version that got through via ZIP), and it looked quite a bit different when I copied it into a file and tried to open it with IE6.

Is there some setting I need to change to get OE to handle incoming HTML attachments better, or are there any other ideas? BTW, I run, so to speak, on Windows ME.

If the message was sent by an Outlook user, it could have been in Rich Text format. Unlike HTML, which is more standard, some mail clients have trouble with RTF, and particularly with the attachments not being decoded properly. One could test the theory by having the sender re-send the attachment with a Plain Text message body.

use file | properties and view the original message source from within OE - do you see html or is there a mime header that says winmail.dat?

if you see html or at least headers for it, you have a problem with the mlang.dll on your system. If you see winmail.dat, it's the sender'sfault and thye need to stop using RTF formatting.

The answer to your question is "both" There is a reference to winmail.dat, and there is HTML - a lot of it - down a little ways in the message.

Your comments and the preceding one led me to try sending the HTML attachment from Lotus Notes on my work PC to my home PC that runs OE. Result: message and attachment came in fine. I will talk to the person that originally sent me the attachment about his settings.

    Thanks to both of you for your help. <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>
